there is a bit of controversy right now concerning netflix.

apparently if you are a high-volume renter they will kind of

down-grade your subscription (ie: put a lag time on your dvd

deliveries, not send you newest releases ahead of low-volume renters

and so on)... certainly they favour low-volume renters over

high-volume renters since they make more money off of the people who

only rent a few yet pay the same monthly price. here in canada, my

online rental place (zip) has now added a charge of a whopping $2.50

per dvd over a limit of 11 discs per month. i am normally around

the 11 mark so i have to be careful to rent only those things that i

really do want to watch. no more renting a workout, previewing it

once or doing it once and then sending it right back the next day.

Hi there,I have, and I enjoyed it. I have the Roku box to stream Netflix on my TV, and I can stream on my laptop. I tried a few dancy and yoga videos. It's great because they were very good workouts that I probably wouldn't have purchased, but it was a treat to try something new.

This service is now being offered in Canada as streaming only.  I just wondered if anyone used it to try out new videos?

Thanks, Sue. I guess that means that those with subtitles are listed as

such?

And most are captioned.

Thanks, . When I think of it I suppose that if the original dvd were

captioned the one from netflix would be. Probably the older ones won't be.

My sister gets Netflix movies/tv from her X-box. Neither captioning nor

subtitles come with that.

I'd say 95% of the DVDs we get from Netflix have captions. Only a few

didn't -- usually indie films or documentaries. Generally if you look on

the Netflix page that describes the movie, there will be a notice or symbol

showing if the movie is captioned (usually on the left side of the

page). I've taken a chance on some DVDs that didn't specifically say

'captioned' and they did have them (whew!)

We watch a lot of documentaries and those are really hit or miss as far as

captions or subtitles. If it doesn't say on the Netflix page, I will

sometimes go to Amazon, look up the movie and see if they mention captions

or subtitles there. (I've also emailed the people making the documentary

and have always gotten a response.)

Thank you so much, Wendi, and thanks also to the others who answered. I

think we'll give it a try.

I have netflix and have had no problem with closed captions. The only problem I

have had is when I try to watch movies online through netflix. TV shows I watch

online through netflix usually do have the captions. It's a new feature for TV

shows to have captions when viewed online, so netflix seems to realize there is

a real need for the captions.

Having just joined the 21st century and acquired cable TV (basic basic) I

am amazed at what is coming on with captions. The 3 Stooges, for

instance, were on the other night as I was channel surfing. With

captioning. A lot of the old B & W westerns as well. So as said,

most things are available with captions. Even a lot of stuff you'd never

DREAM had it. Saw a bit of The Little Rascals as I was surfing, and

didn't see enough to know if it was captioned or not. But someone told

me those haven't been on TV in like 30 years.

I have been renting DVD movies from Netflix for the last four years.  95 to

98% of the movies have either closed captions or subtitles.  The left side of

the detail will show you if the movie has captioned or subtitles.  If it didn't

show, then check the DVD information in the Amazon.

Yes, captioning has been around for some time, & when I had some sight I

used it. Now I am blind & cannot benefit from captioning, & the number of

audio described movies & TV shows are no where near to the level of the

captioning.

If the TV shows you are streaming from Netflix are captioned Regina, consider

yourself lucky. Very few of Netflix's still very limited streaming library,

are, in fact, captioned. Below is a post I made to another CI group several

weeks ago. I've updated it where appropriate with the latest Info. It's

lengthy. I guess I'm a thorough windbag. Or, maybe I'm thoroughly a windbag.

LOL

Start previous post:

It is not true that ONLY foreign language films have captions.

Although, it almost is. Let me explain.

I've watched a few foreign films that had open captions via streaming

Netflix (A great mystery/thriller is the French film Tell No One, BTW.

It starts slow but really paid off in the end. We really enjoyed it. I

highly recommend it.). Those open captioned films can be watched with

captions on any device that streams Netflix. So, in my house, that

includes the computer, the blue-ray player, the Tivo, the Wii and the iPod

Touch.

Several months ago, the ability to see closed captions on select Netflix

streamed movies was made possible on computers and only computers.

However, Netflix said they were working on adding closed captions to

more consumer devices. A few weeks ago, that started to happen, kinda.

The Playstation and the Wii had new Netflix " Apps " released that allows

for closed captions to be seen when streaming one of the very few movies

that Netflix has that support this functionality. Also, the Wii used to

require that you put in a Netflix disc in order to stream a movie. No

more. Now, after I downloaded the new, improved Netflix App., I don't

need to put in the Netflix streaming disc in order to stream a movie.

The new Wii App. user interface is nice too. You can not only see your

instant queue but you can also search for movies and add them to your

queue. However, I just read yesterday that Netflix plans to remove the ability

to add discs to your queue from devices that stream content (boo, that's a

terrible decision). And, most importantly, turning on or off captions is

possible

(again, only for the select few movies for which Netflix has enabled

closed captions). It works quite well.

So, to sum, open captions (foreign films) can be seen on any Netflix

enabled device while only the computer, Playstation and Wii can view

closed captions at this time. Netflix has stated they hope to roll out

new, caption enabled software to more consumer devices over time.

But, wait...there's more and it's not good news. Netflix has only

enabled a few hundred movies with captions. To search for subtitled movies that

can be streamed, follow this link: http://instantwatcher.com/genres/522 That

link should take you to the instantwatcher.com webiste and the " Eglish Subtitle "

filter should be on. If not, click on the " English Subtitles " link at the top

of the page. The database says there are 480 titles as of this writing. That's

an improvement over the 300 some that were available a month or so ago. But,

480 is only a

small percentage of Netflix's streaming catalog and Netflix's streaming catalog

is a small portion of it's physical disc catalog. Given this limited access,

Deaf and HOH persons are quickly being left behind as Netflix pursues and pushes

it's streaming business. The sad reality is that they are touting (and analysts

agree) that the future is streaming, not physical DVDs. I hope captioning can

catch up but given the rocky start, I'm doubtful that will happen without some

type of update to ADA or a similar law.

So, closed captioning works on a select few devices at this time, the

selection of movies is sorely lacking and Netflix has been really slow in

getting captions onto their streamed movies. Here's hoping Netflix will add

more devices and movies quickly.

Have a great day.

End previous post.

Thanks for the great info . I have been confused about just what and what

is not captioned on Netflix. FYI a foreign film I streamed lately through

Netflix with captions is the Swedish film " Girl with the Dragon Tattoo " . Good

movie that followed the book for the most part.
