Guest guest
For me, new music is work. I'll have to sit with the lyrics in hand and listen and learn the song and slowly the singing will filter in. Once I get it, then it's easy to follow. How do you know " what type " of hearing you have? I wear a Freedom processor on top of a Nucleus 24 implant, but I wouldn't know how to describe what kind of hearing I have. Guest guest
I just had to chime in here and say that I CAN hear the lyrics to new, unmemorized songs...especially if there is not a lot of music playing in the background. I don't hear every word, and often have to run through a song several times to get them all, but I wasn't able to hear ANY of the words pre-CI with a hearing aid, so I am blown away by this new ability! in Tennessee AB HiRes90K bilateral implants On Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 9:24 AM, Rae Callaway <tallcarabians@...> wrote: > For me, new music is work. Guest guest
A terrific start! How do you do with listening to a good quality radio? News, and such? I can pop headphones on over Neil Diamond music and hear him pretty well, even the lyrics... " Will You Marry Me " is a good one. Guest guest
Good quality radio, I get about 90%...but take into account that the only time I listen to radio is in the car with all the background noises and road noise thrown in for effect. If I listened to it at home over the Direct Connect I think it would be much clearer Jen On Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 9:45 AM, J Beach <beaches1019@...> wrote: > A terrific start! > > How do you do with listening to a good quality radio? Guest guest
Rae: Ever since meningitis stole my hearing away at age 10, I have had low frequency hearing. It has helped me with lower pitched men's voices and makes music beautiful. (I just can't get the lyrics to unknown songs). If you look on your audiogram, you see if there's anything at the 125Hz, 250Hz range. We have frequencies under the 125Hz, but they aren't tested (is my understanding). Gradually over time, I realize my lower pitched frequencies (shows up on my audiologist's hearing tests) made music so much nicer. For the ci side, with my old 1997 Clarion 1.2, low hmmms are hear a bit higher pitched than they really are (as heard with my natural low frequencies). I popped headphones on w/o my hearing aid or ci and the drums are still beautiful. I hear other instruments too (but remember I was 10 when I lost my hearing never learned instruments). Guest guest
June, I understand some but not all of the words from a new song. Much of it depends on the clarity of the singer's voice and also how loud the musical instruments are in relationship to how loud the voice is. If the music is louder than the voice, it is more difficult to understand the words. I asked my hearing husband this same question. His answer was the same. Hearing people have difficulty understanding words of songs when the music is louder than the voice and when the voice clarity is not optimum. Happy Hearing! Guest guest
June, Hi! Everyone is different. . .I've had my first CI for almost 3 years and could only understand the music lyrics if I knew the song ahead of time. I recently traveled in the car with my daughter and was listening to her music. . . and was able to pick out a phrase in her songs every so often. That was a big FIRST for me! Guest guest
Hi June, I can. I was just telling my husband I was surprised to understand lyrics of songs I am not familiar with. It's been probably 15 or 20 years since I could do that. It's great! I have had one CI for almost 2 years and was just recently implanted with the second. Keep trying! Guest guest
Hi June: The first CI I received was in Nov. 1996 and my activation was on Dec. 18th. On the 21st I attended a Christmas Program. There was a mix of music I knew and songs I didn't know. Surprisingly I was able to at three days out, understand some unfamiliar lyrics. That was the WORST I heard, and over the past 11.5 years it has only gotten better. The sound of music particularly has been improved since I am bilateral. I remember one particular trip to my CI clinic. I don't remember the year, but it was when Kenny came out with " The Greatest " . I had to pinch myself that I understood almost all the lyrics except for when he dropped his voice in one stanza. Other music I understand very well are the country western singers such as Kenny Chesney, Garth and many others as well as the good oldies of Dean , Sinatra, but also many others. I find I am enjoying a much wider breadth of music styles, but still do NOT like a lot of the stuff. I would characterize my tastes as easy listening but I also like opera and contemporary stuff too. My hearing loss began at a very young age, was diagnosed at age 5 and I was profoundly deaf at age 15. I wore hearing aids successfully, and continued even when they did not do much for me. However, I was deeply involved in music, playing several instruments and enjoyed playing in concert and marching band. I played the accordion, B flat clarinet and the bass clarinet. I feel that early exposure has been most helpful to my current music appreciation. Warmly, Carol in WI Music: is anyone hearing the lyrics to unmemorized music Posted by: " J Beach " beaches1019@... Guest guest
Hi June, Just got an e mail from a friend of mine who also had low frequency hearing. She went bilateral, and is pretty sure the Freedom has preserved her low frequency hearing in the newly implanted ear. She'll probably be posting about it on this forum!! Meanwhile, I tend to buy music I'm familiar with, but there are always a few new songs on an CD. So if I like what I hear music wise, and want to know the lyrics for sure, I go to a lyric search engine. Go to Google www.google.com and type in song lyrics. Any number of places to find the lyrics. Then copy them, and listen to the song while reading the lyrics. Learned Bobbie McGee that way. Liked the tune, but only understood about 40% of the lyrics. Now that I know the lyrics, I can sing right along. And I have a 12 year old Nucleus 24 with the straight array. ____________________________________________________________ Internet Security Software - Click here. http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL2141/fc/Ioyw6i3mEWrMWd8zvggmI3wZMNBuHd5YkJom\ GV0tuHNZm4OHIHb4N1/
Guest guest
: May I ask how long you've had your implants? Did you have any residual hearing in your ear(s) before you were implanted? Did you understand words right away, or have to practice for a while? Guest guest
June, I had my first AB HiRes 90K implant in September of 06 and my second in November of 07. My second one is my best ear. My first ear had no hearing at all for 30+ years before implantation...my second one had some hearing with a hearing aid up until 8 months before surgery. I understood words right away...I scored 96% on word comprehension in quiet at two weeks after activation.
