Guest guest
Thanks Harold for the update on your progress. Although my wife says I'm doing very well for only 21 hours, I want more .... now. Must be because I'm so patient. Looking forward to getting more channels turned on and getting a better pitch range. Looking forward to your next update. Tom > > I had similar experiences initially but after the 2nd visit with more programming changes, things began to sound more normal. I have had my 3rd visit now and am estatic over how well I can hear. I would have been happy with the mickey mouse voices after having zero hearing for the last year; so I am very happy. I am now in the process of getting insurance approval for the second CI. I am tired of having to turn around so that the speaker is on my CI side. Yesterday I tried out the extender cable with microphone in the car on a 400 mile trip. It worked out very well not having to turn to look at my wife to hear because my CI was on the wrong (left) side. >  > Harold >
Guest guest
Hi Group, Just had my second mapping yesterday afternoon. Wow. Amazing what I am now hearing. Last week was good but had a number of rough spots. I tried to use CI in a noisy environment on the very same day as activation and the following day was more of the same. I tried to use both the CI on my right ear and the HA on the left. I got frustrated real fast. I put the HA away and stuck to only wearing the CI. I have been without the HA for 5 days. a on this group, wrote me and stated that in her experience I would progress faster with both the CI and HA but it's up to the individual. When I meet with my Audi at my second mapping yesterday, I explained my experiences and frustrations with the HA. I had a hard time with the HA overpowering the CI and sounds seeming to jump from one side of my head to the other. After re-mapping the CI, the Audi started working with the HA and balancing the volume and sensitivity. Wow, double Wow. What a difference. Instead of the high pitched mechanical " Darth Vader " sounds, my brain perceives sounds that are approaching natural sounding voices. Sure, it is not perfect but so much better. Explained to Audi my concern about losing the CI without a good anchor. The Processor ear clips that come from Cochlear don't fit well and are a real pain to secure. She (my Audiologist) made an ear impression and will have a skeleton mold made to secure the CI. In the mean time, she measured my old HA mold tubing against the CI, cut to size, and secured the processor to the old mold. Works great and is comfortable. Audi changed my mappings for everyday, noise, focus, and music from the original volume only mapping. Subtle differences but works in conjunction with the HA. Audi also showed me the cables that came with the CI. I had asked about them based on the discussion thread that has been going on here this past week. (Thank you to all involved for that information). Audi also said that I could start using the " Sound and Way Beyond " DVD to get practice. Drive home (2 1/2 hours) gave me time to converse with my wife without my eyes leaving the road to hear (see) her. Road noise was not the issue that it has been in the past. Noise was subdued. We decided to eat at Ci Ci's Pizza on way home. Mistake! Was crowded with a bunch of kids. However, this gave me time to play with the " Noise " settings on both the HA and CI. To my surprise (and my wife's), I was able to hear her and carry on a conversation. When I got home, I decided to try the cabling that came with the CI to see what would work for me. In the past I had wired my DirecTV box to an RCA Y-adapter from Radio Shack so that I had a 3.5 mm stereo plug along side my chair. I had used a " Bose " headset with some luck in the past. I also had a " Music Links " ear-loop cable that I used with the T-coil setting of my dual HA's. I plugged the supplied cable with the built in filter to the 3.5 mm stereo cable from the DirecTV box and plugged in the " Music Links " earloops into that. (what a cabling nightmare - about 12' of cable). I placed the earhooks on and turned the T-coil of both the CI and HA on. Wow. I could hear the TV again. Sure I had trouble following the dialog but with time and practice, I am sure it will come. I followed along with the closed captioning. Wound up watching TV until 2:00am. What a long day. So far, I cannot say enough positive about my experiences. I may not be typical of the average deafened individual. I know we are all different. My loss was prolonged and gradual over 30 plus years. I lost all of my high frequencies years ago and only had 10-15% of the lows left. Hope this helps some of the new folks looking forward to the CI experience.
