Guest guest
Hearing ANYTHING at all is good for a first mapping. Very few have intelligible speech comprehension with a first mapping. With my first implant, I heard the cadence and rhythm of speech, but not words. Took about 3 months to get it to where I hear much the way I do now. So hang in there, it'll happen. Just takes your brain a while to figure out that THIS is how you hear NOW. To the both of you, Besides the electrical noises I actually do hear sounds and words but does it make since on the first mapping when the audi ask's " Is that loud enough " and your only in her office talking to her and you tell her yes? I wear mine but am getting tired of those electrodes but was told to be patient by Mike and others and that it will go away in a few weeks. When I was getting activated my brother was behind me and I guess he was saying stuff and the audi asked if I heard him and I said I heard something but couldn't put the words together. Should I have her turn the volume program thingy up? It seems the stimulation part of it doesn't really do anything for me as well. Is that the norm for the first time getting activated? Guest guest
On activation, I heard beeps and whistles for every sound. My audiologist spent the next 2-3 hours talking to me about the implant and what to expect and by the end of that time, the beeps and whistles, instead of just rising and falling with her voice/words, started to coalesce into actual words. They were faint and extremely tinny sounding. I spent a lot of time over the following week listening to people (usually one on one) talk to me and by the end of the week, I was hearing all words, even though everyone’s voice sounded like Alvin the Chipmunk. It took about 6 months of gradual sound changes and weekly and bi-monthly re-maps before I started hearing people’s voices close to what they really sounded like. Now, it’s been 8 years since activation and I’d have to say that I hear pretty much normally. I can’t remember when I finally reached that point. People have told me that my voice sounds clearer too – less hollow. I figure that’s because I’m finally hearing my own voice clearly too! Guest guest
Hello All.... I had my first activation appointment at HUP today. After being unable to understand speech for almost two years I am thrilled to say that I am able to understand quite a bit of what is said to me. Everything is very loud and highpitched....Voices sound like helium speech. Typing on this keyboard sounds so staccato...Took me a while to figure out what one sound was as I walked to my car....it was my footsteps. It should be an interesting week as I progress though the sounds of the 'real' world. Hurray for technology...I wish that I had known of Cochlear Implants two years ago. Guest guest
Congratulations, Gail. It really is a wonderful thing. People told me that voices would become " normal " after awhile but I had a hard time believing it. I figured they'd get better but not " normal " . Now I think they do all sound as I remembered. As a bonus I got to hear birds, car alarms, etc. for the first time in many years. Have a ball and enjoy the progression to better and better hearing. Guest guest
Congratulations, GAIL. You are off and running and it will get much better, than at present, as your brain gets used to more different sounds.
