Guest guest
Welcome to the group. Unfortunately, I have to answer yes to both of your surgery inquiries. I had both, but neither seems to have helped in the long run. I also had the frontal sinus ablation procedure, where fat is transplanted into the frontal sinus cavity. This procedure was probably the most barbaric of all, slicing from ear to ear to access the sinus, then stapling the skin back together. Left a lovely scar and a lumpy forehead. Not sure it helped at all either, but did give me a little piece of mind regarding the possibility of having an infection find its way from the frontal sinus into the brain. > > Thanks so much for the comeback. Guest guest
Angel That procedure sounds more appropriate to a torture chanber rather than treatment. I am 58 and have only had the serious side of Samters for about 3 years but suffice to say it is a life changing experience. If you go on youtube and search against FESS SURGERY you can get some videos of the more common sinus procedures but your COLDWELL LUCT doesn't get a result. I have known about the Samters group for about 18 months now and it is certainly the best source of information and shared experience there is and just to know there are other people going through similar trauma is a source of comfort. My day job is database manager for a trade union and I often think we should collectively try to carefully document and index our circumstances and experiences to become a resource for the medics as it could help the quest for better treatment and understanding. There is a conflict between the storing of some pretty personal and intrusive data and value it could collectively become but it would be ideal for a new joiner such as yourself. I know about databases but am a bit weak on web technology. However it is 5:00 in the morning here in the UK and I have been up for an hour getting clear with irrigation, so I do get the time to do some early hours research! Good luck and welcome to the group I will now try to catch 40 winks before the sun rises and also administer my flixonase capsule Mike samters From: angel.spargo@...Date: Wed, 11 Feb 2009 23:15:34 +0000Subject: Wow Thanks so much for the comeback. Guest guest
The Caldwell-Luc procedure is the old, classic way of doing sinus surgery. See for instance : ofcn.org/cyber.serv/hwp/hwc/ent/news/ent482.htmlwww.ghorayeb.com/CaldwellLuc.html (warning : pictures not for the faint of heart)It has been largely replaced by FESS (functional endoscopic sinus surgery), but may still be used when FESS fails (though I fail to see what it can bring that FESS can't, except in emergency or special cases). It is likely that, in the future, more emphasis will be placed on less traumatic procedures, such as those based on balloon dilatation of the sinuses' ostia :http://www.acclarent.com/for-patients/overview/http://www.entellusmedical.com/--- In samters , "angel4mytull" <angel.spargo@...> wrote:>> Thanks so much for the comeback. Guest guest
Hi, Angel, and welcome. You have definitely found the group that knows what you're going through! I have had the surgeries you describe, though I don't know the name of them. My first surgery was through the mouth when I was 20 years old. I was cut from over the eye tooth all the way back to the end of my gum. I don't recall having any pain with it though. My last surgery, a couple of years ago, they drilled my head as you describe, in addition to removing polyps. I was sore, but no real pain that Tylenol and the ice bag couldn't take care of. I've had the septum fixed, twice, and all sorts of things in there removed or rearranged, which I did find painful. I often have polyps removed in the office with a snare. It's an old procedure, but I like it because it's a quick, painless fix for blockage from polyps, and I can have it done and go right to work afterwards. I have had 4 big surgeries in the hospital, and have had office surgery where polyps are snared out, about every 6 months, for years. I don't have asthma, but am allergic to aspirin and NSAIDS. I've been battling this for over 30 years, and the saga continues. I have polyps now, but can usually keep them shrunk fairly well, using Flovent in my nose. When this gets where it doesn't work so well, I call the doctor and he uses the snare to give me some relief. Diane > > > > Thanks so much for the comeback.
