Guest guest
NVRC News - June 28, 2011 ------------ HLAA Convention Exhibits #8 - Westone Laboratories, RIT/NTID, Samsung By Marla Dougherty, 6/28/11 Westone Laboratories, Inc. New exhibitor Westone Laboratories, Inc. had a table overflowing with colorful products. For 50 years Westone has been making custom-fit earpieces. They sell everything from musicians' monitors to personal listening earphones and headphones that protect and enhance hearing. Branching out to the audiology side, they now sell custom ear pieces for hearing aids. For the hearing professional, they sell earlites, Otoscopes and other clinical supplies. For the consumer, assistive listening devices such as TV Ears, the PockeTalker, amplified phones and alerting devices are sold on their website. Westone's extensive product line was a lot to take in. It appeared they brought a sample of everything to the convention! Check out all they have to offer at http://www.westone.com <http://www.westone.com/> _____ Rochester Institute of Technology/National Technical Institute for the Deaf (RIT-NTID) I stopped by the RIT table and asked AnnMarie Arlauckas, from the Outreach Education and Training department, what she wanted our NVRC readers to know. AnnMarie said she would be delighted if we could help get the word out on the RIT bachelor's and master's degree programs for veterans who have hearing loss as a result of their service. Named to the 2010 Military Friendly Schools list, RIT offers tuition-reduced classes with access to C-Print captioning services, counseling, and audiology services which include cochlear implant mapping. RIT holds a job fair every October and assists in finding internships. The graduates are high-tech, highly trained workers and the university helps find work positions. The Outreach Education and Training department offers on-site employer workshops with each program custom designed to address issues unique to that firm. For more information about the veterans degree program visit their website: https://www.rit.edu/ntid/veterans/ _____ Samsung Telecommunications America Are you in the market for a hearing aid compatible cell phone? Mobile phone manufacturer Samsung was at the convention with their hearing aid compatible phones. The Samsung A107 has a M3/T3 rating and the Samsung Rugby II has a M3/T4 rating. The easy to use Jitterbug has a M4/T4 rating. If you are not familiar with the FCC standard for rating cell phones, only those with a rating of M3/T3 or M4/T4 are considered hearing aid compatible. These are the ratings that help hearing aid users find the best phone for their needs. Often a cell phone will give off a buzzing or whining sound when held up to a hearing aid or cochlear implant and the interference makes it difficult to understand. The higher the rating, (M4/T4 being the best) the less likely it is to generate interference. If you have questions about Samsung accessibility and hearing aid compatible devices, contact Kendra Green, the designated agent for accessibility. 972-761-7123 or email kgreen@... _____ C Copyright 2011 by Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons (NVRC), 3951 Pender Drive, Suite 130, Fairfax, VA 22030; <blocked::blocked::blocked::blocked::blocked::http://www.nvrc.org/> www.nvrc.org; 703-352-9055 V, 703-352-9056 TTY, 703-352-9058 Fax.
