I have a Medtronics, implanted August 06. Last week my unit just shut off. As

soon as I contacted my doctor and they spoke to Medtronics rep, they overnighted

me a complete recharger kit, no charge. I would recommend that every time you go

for a follow-up exam, insist that the Medtronic rep be there. They are much more

skilled at tweaking the stimulator than your doctor will be, in most cases. I

have had no trouble with mine up to this point, jusat hoping the battery does

not need to be replaced yet. Good Luck

Wow! That's surprises me. I have Advanced Bionics and I've never had any

problems. My charger went out about 6 months after the surgery, just wouldn't

charge me up all the way. They overnighted me a replacement. My reps are great.

I even get the occasional phone call to make sure everything is OK.....and I've

had mine a little over 2 years. Sorry you had a bad experience. In these

matters, I feel the doctor and the reps make all the difference.

My first rep was from the ST Louis area, he was fired, i live in central

Missouri, so they dislikes coming out to that area for 1 customer, about a 120

mile drive. I pleated with them to take it out , they would not. The cost was

$46,000 . so they did not want to eat that cost. But i tell you ABS is not

growing in central missouri, poor management i think.  RON

That explains it!!!! I know exactly what you mean. Last year I lived in

southern IL for 7 months. I had to drive 1 hour to a doctor or any store.

Specialists were almost 2 hrs away. I would have had to go to St Louis to

continue pain management and that was 2 1/2 hrs away!!! So I was not able to

receive any adjustments to my stimulator, the GP I saw (an hour away) had never

seen anyone with a scs. When I started having pain again, since I couldn't

drive the 2 1/2 hrs to pain management she started writing my Rx for the pain

patch and vicodin. She had no idea what she was even writing, every time she

wrote the Rx for Duragesic, she would give me 3 refills!!!!! And I would get to

the Pharmacy and they would tell me I couldn't have refills. I told them I knew

that, actually it turned in to a joke between us. But this doctor had never had

a patient with chronic pain or a number of other things I have going on. But I

asked her once if we could get

a rep to come to her office to adjust my stimulator and she told me I couldn't

do that. I should have called the company, but I was already getting fed up

with the lack of medical care there. I ended up moving back to Texas (I live

between Dallas and Fort Worth).

I am getting CONFLICTING info,, I live in the state of Washington and it's

my understanding that Medicaid no longer pays for hearing services, this

includes hearing test, hearing aid, and (gulp) cochlear implant. Children,

under the age of 19 are still covered.

Now, I am wondering this,,, it seems to me, from what I read, the same

rule applied for those who is getting medicare within the state of Washington

as well.....

What is going on,, I thought Medicare covers speech processors.

I really needs to know because I lost my processor last week and of

course,, we know that ESPrit 3G is obsolete now if I am not mistaken. I am so

lost and not sure what to do.. Any idea?

Hey it's good hearing from you after so long.

I called Listen for Life in Seattle and they told me to call Cochlear America

directly. Not wanting to call them through relay, I asked my daughter to call

and she did. She said they are super nice. She talked to 3 people before we

got to the one we need to talk to.

This person said she heard the same rumor I heard but assured us that this is

NOT true. I am eligible for upgrade, something about 5 years rule.

Because I have N24CA implant (pre-freedom), I have a choice of Freedom or if i

am willing to wait, get Nucleus 5 sometimes in mid-April (at last report.) She

explained that the Nucleus 5 had been around for a while but NOT for those who

has N24CA implant and this is coming out next month, we hope. We talked at great

length about which is which. Seems that Nucleus 5 is better option.

When she said $1,500 after payment from Medicare, I practually FLIPPED. Without

a job, I can't afford it. And I can't get a job without the speech processor.

Cancel each other out, huh?

Good news, because my processor is being paid for by Medicare, I am automally

qualified to finance the amount owing at ZERO INTEREST! Now who can beat that?

I think I will go ahead with it... I told my daughter tonight,, even if I find

my 3G, I think I will be better off with the N5 for several reasons, it bounds

to fail soon (had it 7 years) and I don't want to be caught without it if I

found a job later on.

Meanwhile, I am dying to know how much people like the N5 over 3G. Anyone?

Well and look what you did, you rattled the cages at Cochlear and here

you are going to get the N5. Heh. Good job Lee and I hope its as good as I

think it is.

One real good reason to upgrade is the remote control. It can be

maddening to have to cycle thru the 4 programs sometimes.

Quote of the nanosecond...

In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless person is a

shame, two is a law firm and three or more is a congress.

,, if you read my message eariler,, I LOST MY PROCESSOR, so I have nothing

to trade in.

I know the difference between medicaid and medicare and I was told that medicare

CAN decide the rule based on where you live and the info I orginally got said,,

no DME for WA state residents. But Cochlaer America found what I saw and

explained it was in error. I hate it when www.medicare.gov gave wrong info!

Today, I talked to them again, asking about payment per month. I am NOT

thrilled with $100 a month! This is hard on those who is getting only 73% of

full SSDI amount. Maybe I should hit the local Lions Club.
