Guest guest
Hi Penelope, There is the deductible question, and all that. Plus it is often stated that there is a better ear, which you may not have had implanted the first time around. I was lucky in that I did get the better ear implanted. One that hadn't been used, or heard out of for like 20 years. Figure it was rested. Anyway, if you have both ears implanted, you will have the better ear done for sure. If you cannot use the hearing aid right now, then I'd say you have nothing to lose. If you aren't doing well with the CI, but the HA helps, then stay where you are. I'm not sure where the advice to not wait too long between implants came from, because I waited 14 years between my first and second. And then waited 18 months for the mapping I wanted on it. So, if your hearing aid is helping you more than the CI is, I'd stick with the hearing aid. You can always get the other ear done when it gets too bad to use a HA in. I'm reading with interest the results of a second CI. I had my first done this past January. Now I'm struggling to decide if I should also do the other side. I still have some hearing in that side although it is bad enough to qualify for a CI. It's been hard trying to figure out if the first one is really making that much of a difference. I still need to work harder on understanding vowels, etc. in hopes that words will be clearer without having to lip read too. I keep seeing that the second CI made all the difference for those implanted but I'm worried that it won't for me. I should make a decision before the year is out as I have been told that it is better not to wait too long between implants. It would also be better for my insurance in that I've met my deductible for the year with the first CI. (Imagine that!) Would appreciate input from all of you! Guest guest
Thanks for the input! I really don't know if my better ear was implanted as both are pretty bad. I choose the one I thought was the worst! I do not have hearing aids and have never been able to wear them. They only made my hearing worse. I can see that been bilateral means really re-thinking a lot of my life. So I want to be sure before I make a decision. Thank you again for taking the time to reply!
