Guest guest
The implant should give you so e quality hearing. there are beeps to distinguish the settings and programs. I am not sure how it works yet. I will let you know after Tuesday. I got N5. i can't feel a thing. I can't tell it is in there. but there is still so e numbness in the area of the outer ear and the temple area. You should be able to operate by the processor. If the processor seemed too small you must have looked at a childs processor. there were operable buttons on the adult processor I was able to press them and move them.   the surgery did leave me witha bsolutely no hearing in the implant ear. But i am hoping that is restored on tuesday at activation time so prayers please. Have a great day! The processor is very small and the buttons on it too. Personally I might struggle with the buttons. The remote assistant is menu driven and I would think I would not be able to use it since I'm blind. The reason for the thinner implant is to protect thin skin flaps when implanting children and elderly. Please let me know your experiences as blind N5 recipients or current Nucleus recipients who saw the N5 what do you think. Regards. Guest guest
Hi Ilana, While the remote for the N5 is menu driven, it is not hard to use tactually. The remote is square at the top and rounded at the bottom. The big oblong button you use to turn the remote on and off is the bottom half of the remote, so once you orient it in your hand, then you can figure out what is where. There are 4 buttons on the top, to access each of the 4 programs. They are rectangular and horizontal with 2 on the top of a screen, and 2 on the bottom. You do not need to see the screen to use these buttons. They are next to each other horizontally. And they will beep when you are wearing the processor to let you know which program you have activated. Then below is an oblong screen which turns the remote on and off, with buttons around it. The upper and lower ones control volume, and the left and right ones control sensitivity. They each have a raised arrow on them so you can feel whether you are going up OR down. I'd say the remote is easy to use without looking at it, or being able to see it. You might have someone put braille near the buttons if necessary. I think once someone shows you where the buttons are, you will be able to find them by feel alone. For the most part, once you get mappings you like, you don't use the remote that much anyway. You recharge it by plugging it into the bottom and that is easy to locate. If you recharge it once a week, then you don't have to worry about it not having power. I haven't used mine for over a month and it's still fully charged. So if you are worried about the remote, I don't think it would be much of a problem for a blind person to use. Guest guest
Anyone know why the UV light must be removed from the Dry & Store for the N5?
Guest guest
I was curious about that too, , and checked last year with my friend at Ear Technology (Dry and Store) for the answer. She told me that Cochlear had observed discoloration of the N5 processor housing with use of the UV germicidal lamp and thus the recommendation to remove the lamp from the " Global " models for use with the N5. The N5 uses a different plastic (polyester) than the Freedom (ABS) - apparently less tolerant of UV light. Bob ..... Now that you have the N5 you might as well forget where you put it. LOL On the other hand perhaps you could get the Zepher and sell the Global one. Quote of the nanosecond... Guest guest
I was wondering if the new nucleus 5 is worth the price to update from the Freedom. Has anybody out there done that and are you glad you did?
Guest guest
Nucleus 5 was my first implant and I didn't pay. The NHS did Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device nucleus 5 I was wondering if the new nucleus 5 is worth the price to update from the Freedom. Has anybody out there done that and are you glad you did?
Guest guest
Yes, I am glad I did. For me, speech is some clearer on the phone, & I am doing some better in some noisy places. I still struggle with the latter if very noisy. I was in a car with another with a different CI, she struggled to hear with a heavy downpour, while it was easy for me surprisingly. She also struggle in a room with air conditioners, & I did okay. Of course, this is my personal experience. Others?
Guest guest
I am also in the process of deciding whether or not to upgrade from the Freedom to the N5, leaning toward going for the upgrade. Any feedback on the experience of others would be most helpful. My understanding is that the device is a little smaller (than the Freedom) and that the sound is more clear, perhaps better in noise and for music? Does anyone have experience that bears this out? Thanks, Dana > > I was wondering if the new nucleus 5 is worth the price to update from the Freedom. Guest guest
For any considering upgrading to the N5 processor, don't forget the upgrade package price goes up $500.00 to $8475, effective July 1. Bob .......
Guest guest
I hope to be able to weigh in on this soon. I have ordered my upgrade to the N5, got it, and am waiting on my programming appointment on 7/7. I think the thing I'm MOST excited about is its water resistance. My first Freedom, back in 2006, lasted 2 years of sweaty Houston summers. Since that first replacement, I've had to replace about every 6 months. It's ridiculous! Guest guest
Rae, You may want to get a Dry n Store. That could help. Guest guest
Disposables. I tried the rechargeables, but they just don't give me enough time (1 day of use vs. 5 days of use with disposables). Guest guest
Ahhh, that is why the Freedoms did not hold up. The rechargeables offer a much better seal because they do not need air to function as do the disposables. Quote of the nanosecond... Guest guest
Maybe - but it doesn't explain why my first one lasted so long - with disposables.
