Cannot help but wonder if companies are legally bound to inform its

consumer base of changes to policy such as this one.

Banks and credit card companies must do so when they make changes to the

user agreements. Is this any different? It would be an unacceptable to

find oneself facing a loss of a sound processor and thinking he/she was

covered, to make the claim only to learn of this new policy after the fact

and not having a plan B as backup.

N5 upgrade does not cover loss/theft

Just wanted to warn people getting an upgrade, especially those who maybe

upgraded in the past: starting with the N5 upgrade, Cochlear is no longer

including a 1 time loss/theft replacement with the purchase of a new

processor. They revised their policy (without telling anyone) when the N5

upgrades first became available, so now the loss/theft only applies to the

original implant processor, i.e. the one you got when first implanted.

If you were just implanted and got the N5, you are good for 3 years with

1-time loss and theft replacement through Cochlear. If you recently

upgraded to N5, you only have the 3 year warranty. No theft/loss. This will

come as a shock to those of us (or whose children) are used to getting the

loss/theft included with each upgrade. I know it came with both the 3G and

Freedom upgrades. There are probably a few people walking around with no

loss/theft coverage without knowing it. If your N5 processor gets stolen,

either that is the end of it and you go back to using the Freedom, or you

buy one for $7000 (or somehow finagle your health insurance company to buy

it for you -- good luck.)

I first learned of this because a child who upgraded from the Freedom to the

N5 in March 2010 recently lost her N5 processor. Her mom called Cochlear

and was told of the policy change, and that she was not covered. The

child's audiologist thought there had to be a mistake, so she called

Cochlear and was told there was this policy change (that they didn't ever

really tell people about -- even some people at Cochlear were unaware.)

This policy change also affects N22 users who upgraded to the Freedom within

the last 3 years.

So, just a word of warning -- you may wish to insure your shiny new N5 (and

it *is* shiny, after all, and I do like that) through a rider added to your

homeowner's insurance, or through ESCO.

(Oh, and one of the moms on the cicircle called Advanced Bionics to find out

their policy on covering loss/theft for upgrades and was told it was the

same as Cochlear's :-( )

I'm going to sound bitter - which in a way I am - but this just goes to

emphasize that even though the product gives wonderful results (for most), we

are still just dealing with a company that is in the business to make a profit.

The dollars are all that really count.

Thank you for this information. It's unfortunate because we all know the

process. The Freedom will eventually become " obsolete " just as the 3G has and

the processors before it. For me - when I could hear with a CI - the 3G gave me

the best sound. Some things are just plain aggravating.

FWIW, not just Cochlear - Advanced Bionics' one-time loss/damage policy

has applied only to the original processor for years.

I don't know this for sure, but since the government regulations are so strict,

I would doubt that they have loss/theft coverage but you may be able to get a

replacement (which will be a refurbished product) because of need which your

audiologist would have to confirm.

I'm in Australia and have not head off that policy here ! Therefore I have to

take out a separate policy to insure it at a not insubstantial annual premium !

Alice,

Sometimes brand loyalty comes roumd and bites us in the behind. In this

I agree with you Bob. Many or most of these consumers who purchased the N5 as

an upgrade had to come up with the money from their own pockets. This " clause "

is a huge loss for them. It's not easy to come up with $6500 which is the cost

of the N5 processor and although I don't know the cost of the Harmony - or

whatever the most recent AB processor is - I'm sure it's pretty close.

Because you were implanted with the N5 implant, it appears that you do have the

loss/theft coverage or you would in the US. You might want to read your

Hi alice,

Here in the UK I do not have any documents station a policy or anything the only

documents I have is the instruction manual I have indeed got the cochlear

brandad bag with all the accessories in it but I certainly do not have any

policy/insurajnce papers. As you most likely are aware, we here in the united

kingdom have an NHS (national health service) and it all goes through the

patients PCT (primary care trust) and I believe it is different in the

USA/canada and australie etc?

, as you should probably know by now, there are many many

Hi robert,

I certainly will do that, I just think in the USA it is a bit unfair that you at

times have to pay yourself depending on your own " insurance " baffles me a bit to

be honest.

On the other side of the pond many see the UK and Canada's way of

handling medical needs in the same light. So I dont know that ours is

unfair. Just a matter of perspective.

Fair enough rob, just my view I guess when I went to the florida keys in 2000 it

actually costed around £10'000 to insure me medical wise but I think that was

because of my strokes. At that time I had had around 3 strokes but in all I have

had 5 strokes and still remain mobile amazingly. Now I have a cochlear implant I

do wonder how much it would be to insure me should I fall ill if I go to america

again (which I would love to)

I will check it out! I will look on play.com as they do cheap discoujnted DVDs

on there and free postage. Hope it has subtitles as I am still learning sounds

with my cochlear implant.

Haha that is awesome I have a blackberry and don't have any music on my phone

but shortly I am going to connect my ipod to my proocessor and listen to old

tunes (I'm not into the latest music) as I have not had a chance to get into it

as my hearing started to get worse around 4 years ago took 38 months from

referral to implantation for me! :(

Cool ! I don't use the music program just the everyday with a pair of sillouets

with my hearing aid as well ! When I first started listening to music with the

implant alone with the accessory cable , I printed out the lyrics to a lot of my

favorite songs to follow to train my brain ;)
