me.

which ear for implant?

My mother, 83, will be getting a CI next week. The doctor said he likes to

start with the worse ear and the audiologist recommended the best ear. So now we

are confused. I'm curious about the experiences of others and if it made a

difference.

My mothers hearing is very bad and it had degraded to the point that there may

not be much difference between her good and bad ear. She can't hear much of

anything and doesn't know sign language or read lips well. Thanks for any

suggestions or input!

Laurie, does your mom have email? I know a lady who is now 88 and

received her CI when she was 85. Don't you think it'll be great if

they correspond? I live in Cape Town, S.Africa and so does the 88 y/o

lady. Regards. Ilana

Hi Laurie, I'm 70 had implant mar,11' my hearing was about the same as your

Mon's. I'm rt handed so i chose to have done my rt ear.

So glade i did much. It would have been vary hard, if possible, to operate the

processor if on my left ear.

We must realize not to expect recommendations because because LAWYERS like to

sue.

I lost all my hearing through 2010 and I had CI in my left ear 3/25/11 because

it was the ear that lost hearing latest. I am now scheduled for my right ear

9/23/11 and really excited about having bilateral hearing especially when I am

driving and have a hard time hearing with my left ear and passenger is sitting

on my right.  I am 60 years old and work as a high school and college math &

physics instructor.

Back in '03 they did my best ear because they figured it had the best chance of

working. If I had it to do over, I'd have done the worse one because I know the

CI works so I would have saved the best natural sound I had left, plus the CI.

It was recommended that my worse ear be implanted. My better ear was saved for

a hearing aid because it had a small amount of residual hearing. Nearly

everyone I know had their worse implanted, but that doesn't make it right for

everyone.

Either way, she is going to be one happy person and so will you after she's had

the CI a few months.

Hi Laurie,

My CI surgery was in 2002 and my ENT was leaning towards implanting my right

ear. I vetoed him since I never heard a sound via that ear in my whole life

and a hearing aid never helped it. I knew I once heard sound from my left ear.

Both ears tested pretty much the same at my CI Candidacy. I felt like if I was

going to go through with it, I wanted it to be done on an ear I knew heard

sounds at one time. My ENT went with my decision and today I am in awe with

what the CI has given me!

Good luck to your Mom on her CI journey! May her surgery be successful and

her recovery smooth!

Hi Laurie

We went with the worst ear for my daughter and she wears a hearing aid in her

other ear for environmental sounds

This strategy seems to be working for us. Good luck!

Ilana,

That really would be wonderful for them to communicate. My mother doesn't use

email but I could print out the email for her to read and let her respond from

mine. She's not really into technology much. She is very nervous about the whole

thing. Please pass on my email though : laudane@... Thanks!
