Guest guest
Hi Joe and Group, I couldn't be happier with my decision to get a Cochlear Implant (CI). I,like you, was apprehensive. I read and heard about the success stories as well as the not so successful. I met people with CI's and asked their experiences. I belong to ALDA and HLAA and have spoken with many CI recipients. I underwent the surgery on April 22st this year. I was activated on May 20th. I have been pleased with the progress that I am experiencing in less than one month. I have been having some family health issues in the past two weeks and haven't been studying my lessons as I should. I have, however, been listening to as many different sounds as possible. Different individuals, different animal sounds, insects, birds, construction sounds are all new. I am totally amazed at some of the things that I am now hearing. Crickets, dog's toe nails on the floor, a pen clicking, a clock on the wall, all new sounds for me. The first day that the processor was activated, everything sounded mechanical and broken like " Darth Vader " crossed with " Mickey Mouse " . Everything was wierd, but I was hearing. Now, after 4 weeks, voices are sounding natural. People that I have known for years now sound like I remember them sounding. Improvements are occurring on a daily basis. I realize that I may be one of the lucky ones, that I have been so successful, but I also think I'm putting in an effort to improve. By the way, I have discovered audio books. Went and purchased an unabridged audio book by and got the paperback of the same book. I am reading and listening at the same time. What fun and what a great teaching and learning tool. Hope this helps with your decision to receive a CI and go ahead with the surgery. Ask away if you have questions. There are a lot of wonderful folks on this forum that are willing to share with you.
