Guest guest
While hearing aids make the sounds louder, which don't help in understanding speech, CIs will not only give you sound, but better understanding of what you do hear. There comes a point when hearing aids will do more harm than good, as they are nuances and just make the racket louder. The CIs can be programed to not let sound get too loud. While speech may not sound great at first, with time and practice, it will get better. With my first CI after the first mapping, I was somewhat disappointed as I could not understand things. I thought this is no better than my hearing aid, but while stuck in traffic, I heard the radio say, " 94 degrees " . I had not understood anything on the radio for years! I went to the library and checked out books and the audio that went with them. (children's books first). After a few books, I was even understanding the tapes, which had been hard or impossible for me before the implants. Everyone has a different experience and I have know one that took quite a time to get much, but even he thought it was better than the hearing aid. I will add, that CIs help you hear things outside when you are inside the house. hear birds sing and many little things that you take for granted and almost forgotten to a deaf person, cause you spend so much effort to just trying to understand what you are hearing.
