I'm actually shocked that this is supposed to be a " support group " for CI users

and those seeking info on CI's.  Just cuz I made a remark about the Cochlear

America recall (I said I " believe " ) I dont deserve to have all the nasty

comments.

This list, I noticed,  strongly supports Cochlear American and was simply

providing info that I thought the person would find informative.   I included

Enovy simply as a option since the person that was requesting info and since

this  IS supposed to be a " support group " I thought I'd be kind enough to

provide a little bit of everything.     I could care less what CI a person

chooses, the main point is to provide support and HEAR AGAIN.

In the future, I'll just make any comments and suggestions privately now, as

this is not the first time I've been " ganged up " on for expressing my opinions.

Joleen,

You were not ganged up on because of your opinions. You made a blanket

statement without checking facts and used the word " all " . This is a very

good reason why none of us should speak on the brands we are not implanted

with. Mistakes have been made from all sides and it probably will not be

the last time it happenbs.

If we do not know for a fact, then we should not say it. " I believe " or

" its my understanding " can be problematic.

, but reality, a CI support group should also be supporting of everyone's

understanding. Not just a few. Otherwise it is not a support group. Even though

I believe you make many good points, I don't always agree with all in fact have

read some I knew was not completely accurate. . But here again everyone wouldn't

agree with all I believe.

I do believe this Cochlear America N-5 voluntary recall has been a sore

subject for some. Not sure why. For I have the N-5 and have no problems talking

about their problems. Doesn't make them bad, doesn't make them good. Just a

personal choice. Do I like the fact I have to be re-implanted ? No. But that is

my personal feelings. But I am still going with CA. Could choose to go

otherwise. Was not required, from what I have read and advised. In fact the

article that, I BELIEVE, was sent out by you. Also stated they were having a

hard time getting some re-implants to accept the Freedom. Why, I don't know. But

probably personal choice. For some it seems hard to accept an implant that is 7

years old. Not only that was told by my center the surgery s a little more time

consuming because of the depth of Freedom compared with N-5. So see , so

much can be discussed about Cochlear America's N-5 as well as all of the

others. If this is a support group. I would think we can be open about

everything. As long as it is to the best of our knowledge. I , personally do not

believe there is much difference with all of the different brands. Just personal

choices

Wanda,

There are two aspects to support (in my opinion). One is sharing

personal experiences. The other is providing accurate information.

We cannot go wrong with the first. There is no right or wrong, we

simply talk about our own experiences.

We can go wrong with " accurate " information. When we give " accurate "

information that is not accurate, we can do more harm than good. Facts are

verifiable. If we do not know, we should not bring it up. I dont have an

AB product, nor a MedEl product so I best not talk about either unless I

absolutely know I am giving accurate info. But since I am certain that

users of those two products in this group know more about their devices, its

safe to leave it to them.

That is why " I believe " and " its my understanding " dont really benefit

others.

, but a support group NEEDS, " I believe " or " My understanding " without

it, it no longer would be a support group, it would be an ad for whatever brand

you wanted to trump. As a for instance. I did a ton of research on AB as well as

Cochlear America and found, here it is ,I Believe AB was more successful

with long term deaf implantation. In fact my doctor as much as admitted it but

said for me, because of magnet issue would be better with Cochlear America's.

But you see I was speaking about AB, which I do not have. So maybe instead of

attacking someone. Wouldn't it be better and come across more supporting with

just stating YOUR understanding of it? Because I have to agree, it looked like

an attack because someone made a comment about Cochlear America product that had

chose to go with another company. I really don't think that would be in the best

interest for CA. I have an N-5 and I certainly don't feel I need to protect the

fact. I love dialog, with dialog there are viewpoints. Just my opinion.

, there is a very successful support group for acoustic neuroma patients,

in fact doctors now come on and write comments. And you will see what I mean.

Patients give their views of different treatments as well as Center choices, and

even address issues like CI's. Very interesting and informative site. All

rounded around support. Just a thought.

Joleen,

I'm an Advanced Bionics CI user and proud of it but even I was surprised at your

blanket statement on Cochlear's recall. Only the N5 series implants are on

recall. I believe the others were in the rights to set the facts straight for

you.

It is important all information presented about what each major CI company has

to offer be accurate as much as possible so candidates or those thinking of

getting a CI can make informed decisions.

I can emphasize with people who want a Cochlear N5 implant but are upset with

the recall and perhaps unwilling to go to an older implant like the Freedom. It

wouldn't surprise me though if these people are willing to wait months until the

Cochlear recall is lifted. I think that's great.

When my older AB implant failed a few months ago after 11 years, AB's recall was

still in effect. I was now completely deaf, not liking it, and actually

considered other options such as Cochlear and Med-El because I really didn't

want to wait months to hear again. But I love AB's excellent products and

superb customer support so I was willing to wait months until the recall was

lifted. I had simultaneously bilateral surgery on Sept. 23rd and had my revised

side turned on just last week. So I'm a happy hearing camper again!

I feel terrible for those who want a N5 implant system but now have to wait. I

know how you guys feel! Let's pray they get to the market as quickly as

possible.

Here's the thing, Wanda. All three companies are well represented in

this group. Therefore, it only makes sense to allow those with a particuiar

brand to give specifics on their brand. Why not? If someone gave wrong

info, another user with the same brand can correct it.

If I drove a Chevy, I would not find a Ford mechanic to be as credible

as a mechanic who specializes in Chevys when it came to repairs. Sure, he

might be proficient in Chevys but unless he was freelance, he probably would

not be as up on Checy issues.

Hey, I agree the person who can closer define their product is the one who owns

one. BUT, , this is what i see as a problem. I personally know 3 people

whom have chosen to quit coming to this site because when they do post or just

want to read comments they feel some are very judgmental and their viewpoints

are the only viewpoints. Now because I am involve with a few other support

groups I know it is very easy to write in a lot that was not intended. So that

is why I believe we could get our point across in a more kinder way. Me,

personally, it would take a lot to get me off track. Maybe because I have gone

through a lot. :0). So I have tougher skin. :0). Anyway you are right that

for the most part those that have whatever brand they have know more about their

experience with that brand than those that don't . But I personally would like

to see more open discussion about our opinions of what we might have read

somewhere or whatever . And not take offense at a comment that might be

different than what you feel. To me that is more informative and supportive.

Either way, not a problem.

, think you sure very informative at times and really enjoy your posts!

So please don't think I am saying you are not an asset to this board, you are.

:0)

Thanks Wanda. I just feel that when it comes to black and white, we

should choose accuracy. I would rather make an error about my own brand and

no one is going to get bent out of shape. ;)

Like Joe Friday used to say, Just the facts, ma'am.

As to people leaving, unfortunately, we are talking about humans with

different personalities and sometimes conflicts arise. You and I could

stand shoulder to shoulder, looking at the same sunset, and have radically

different opinions. There is no right or wrong, just a difference of

opinion. That is perfectly aceptable. Of course I am right. LOL

I like this group. Not much off topic postings with political/religious

posturing. Great shared experiences. Sometimes the " facts " get out wrong and

the " corrections " can seem too harsh. We can learn to be more gentle in that

aspect.

I do hope that we welcome all CI brands here. Each one has features that some

people prefer over another. I am glad there is competition to help prod the

improvements along. Plus we have more people hearing!

Have a great weekend! From beautiful Texas (we need more rain though)

Kathy,

I am sure if they had known of the problem beforehand, they would not have
