Guest guest
, I was going to a pain specialist - he's the one that had me on Methadone. He believed that the implants were the " offending agent " and as soon as I got them out he told me I should get better and didn't need his services anymore. He told me to wean off the Meth, so I did. That's when all the pain came back. So that's when I went to my family doc and since he " couldn't " give me anything, he referred me to another pain clinic. I got a call yesterday afternoon saying they are not taking any new patients! What the heck am I supposed to do? I have enough pain meds for about a week! It's getting so much worse because I'm not sleeping. I am so frustrated! Guest guest
Pam did you ask them exactly what your supposed to do if they are not taking new patients? I would ask them what your supposed to do since no one else will help you. I would also suggest you contact the Dr who was prescribing you the methadone, and make an appt with him, and sit down with him and explain to him that your illness is not just magically gone with the explant. Tell him nicely but firmly that your still in pain, that you need to be treated and that you know that it is your right as a patient of his that he continue to help you. It is also your right as a patient to be treated for pain with pain medication and as long as your not abusing them there is no reason for him to stop treating you until your pain is gone. There are actual laws that back this up. Dr's need to understand that they are obligated to help people. THey cannot by law turn thier back on you Pam. You have to let them know that your aware of patients rights. You also need to let your family Dr know that in the meantime while your waiting to be seen by professionals that he needs to at least give you something to hold you over, like vicodin or something. Explain to him the situation and that until you get with a specialist you need help. Ultram by the way, is another pretty good med, for pain, it is non narcotic but very helpful and Dr's are usually easy about giving it to you. Try to get some ultram if they won't give you anything else. I found it helped me about as much as vicodin. Ok gotta run to the dentist, I cracked one of my crowns, I will write when I get back and tell you more about patient advocacy and patient rights In , " Pam " <nannapam37@y...> wrote: > , I was going to a pain specialist - he's the one that had me > on Methadone. Guest guest
-- Right on! I admire your courage. We really do need to stand up for rights and not be cowed into begging, crying or caving in. I sometimes wonder if men get this treatment if they ask for pain meds. I can't help feeling they don't. Speaking of which, take car repair for an example. Last week I took my van back because I paid $1500 to get it fixed and it was still leaking oil. The " nice " repair manager told me that my daughter must have drove over a parking block and that was after he fixed the van. He then went on to say it would probably be pretty expensive to fix. My husband said baloney, the dent under the car had been there before they gave us the estimate to fix everything. Then he talked to the service guy and all of a sudden he changes his story and says they probably caused the leak when they were repairing the van and it was minor and they would fix it for free. So I was treated entirely differently than he was and he doesn't know squat about cars either. Just because he's a man. Everyone thinks women are hysterical when it comes being sick not to mention psychotic and hypochondrial!! It some ways women have come a long way and in others there is still alot of change to be had. Thanks for giving us ideas of how to handle these type situations. Guest guest
Kathy we really have to be tough, that is just the way it is. I don't take crap from anyone, and sometimes I have had to really fight for my rights, but I usually win. Hee hee. I don't give up easily on something i want or that I believe in, it is just the way I am. Anyhow, i knew what I needed for pain, and I made damn sure that I found the right Dr for it, and they always treated me with respect. One time I was leaving for two weeks to go on vacation and they seemed hesitant about giving my meds early, but I told her that having withdrawals on my vacation was not going to be part of my relaxing and enjoying myself on an expensive cruise, and they were understanding and since then, whenever I needed to pick up my meds early they were really nice about it. I think it is really important to make ourselves very clear from the beginning that we are strong assertive women who don't take any crap from anyone. hugs In , " mikat828 " <mikat828@y...> wrote: > -- > > > Right on! Guest guest
, I can be strong and assertive when it comes to other people that I see being taken advantage of. Like my mom - she got shingles last year and was in terrible agony. She has never taken anything more than tylenol her whole life and doctors were treating her like she was an addict or something - they wouldn't help her! I finally went on an appt with her and if her doctor hadn't given her what he did, I was prepared to speak up - but I didn't have to. Maybe just the fact that I was there made a difference?? Anyway, she got what she needed. Why do I feel like I have to apologize to everyone for my pain? It's not like I can help it or anything. I always feel so guilty! I hate it. I had planned on calling my family doc today but was in bed most of the day with a horrible headache. I'll try again tomorrow. Talk to you later. Guest guest
Maybe from working in hospitals and around Dr's for so long I just got used to them being the way they are and know that allot of them just don't think about things unless you remind them. They are not perfect at all. I also remember the first time I saw my rhuemy in Ca and told him that I was in pain all the time and that a friend gave me a vicodin and that it really worked. From that day on he gave them to me, in fact he gave me too many, it was ridiculous. But at least he was sympathetic, he tried to get me to switch to oxy, but at the time I liked the vicodins! I got here to Idaho Falls after 6 months after explant and was still in so much pain and I finaly found a place that is called family resource center. I went in there and told him how my old doc in Ca gave me vicodin and it helped, he was not too crazy about the amount I was taking so he switched me over to norco which have more vicodin and less tylenol but after awhile he too, pushed for me to switch to oxycontin. I did and then he also told me that he felt I needed a specialist and sent me to the pain specialist, probably one of only 2 real ones in this small town. Anyhow she was awesome. I guess I got lucky because I never had to ask for much, they just switched me to the oxy ir and oxycontin and that was it. It was simple. But again, I had a history of pain going back to CA and as my Dr there told me when I was worried about finding a pain Dr in Idaho, he told me that I had to be firm with them and that they needed to know that this was what worked for me and that he would be happy to talk to them if needed. He was awesome in that respect, but i feel that I made myself clear, that the pain meds kept me working full time, and working out almost everyday and that without them I was afraid I would be stuck in bed with no life and no job. They respected the fact that I exercised with my pain and that I was holding down a job etc, and just felt that if that was what I needed to continue to lead a normal life, they were going to help me. Agressiveness was not really needed, but being firm and not taking any crap is good. You can do it girl, don't let your life slip away in pain and suffereing. Don't sit around waiting for things to get better either, when your in pain it is so hard to make any improvements, for me my health did not get much better till I got my pain under control, you need to tell them that this is not something you want or are seeking for fun, that you want your health back and you want to start to work and exercise again and that it is not possible if your stuck in bed everyday in agaony. Tell them you have real pain and that your right as a patient is not to suffer needlessly. You have to tell them your not seeking drugs, just seeking relief. hang in there, it will work out, but you may have to fight for your rights In , " Pam " <nannapam37@y...> wrote: > , I can be strong and assertive when it comes to other people > that I see being taken advantage of.
