Guest guest
Hi, I was told that unlike past CI's from years ago, today CI users would not need another surgery if there are upgrades or improvements or technological advances in CI's in the future. Instead, they'd just change the external parts, is that the case ?
Guest guest
Yes, HH, it is true for Cochleas Americas' products. This company has shown to have a proven record and a life long commitment to its customers, making all of their internal CI components " backward compatible. " This company is gearing out new external processors as upgrades to be worn with the N22 internal components, after providing such upgrades to people with the N24 internals. I believe that Advanced Bionics does, someone on this group will chime in if I am missing anything, but I'm not sure for which products, and for how long. N24, just got an upgrade Freedom external On Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 8:38 PM, hhissues <HHIssues@...> wrote: > > > > > > > Hi, > > I was told that unlike past CI's from years ago, today CI users would > not need another surgery if there are upgrades or improvements or > technological advances in CI's in the future. Guest guest
I've been upgraded with my speech processor which was Harmony and there was no surgery involved. I've been extremely pleased with it and have no regret. Guest guest
I can chime in about Advanced Bionics internal implant. AB uses " forward technology " meaning that when AB develops new and improved ways to hear they design a new external processor, such as the HiRes 120, Harmony which the FDA approved last year. The internal implant is designed to stay in place and can handle any upgrades. AB also has a life long commitment and proven record for its customers. Research is going on daily with all CI companies to help all of us improve our hearing. I have been part of a recent research project and know how important this is and how we benefit. Amazing isn't it? Bilateral/Harmony
Guest guest
Hi: I know that Cochlear America is dedicated to making implants that are backward compatible. This means that all future implants will be compatible with the internal device. So, if someone had a Cochlear America implant 20 years ago, they can still upgrade to the Freedom. I do not know if this is true for AB or MedEl. Guest guest
Welcome, Michele. You've come to the right place. I am a Cochlea Americas' Freedom upgrade N24C user, so I don't know anything about Advanced Bionics' Auria. Wasn't there any information on upgrading your processors on their website? This would be the first place to look. http://www.bionicear.com/index.cfm?langid=1 & Second place to look is to ask your audiologist directly -- preferably the SAME person who does your MAPpings. He/she would be knowledgeable. I believe that all cochlear implant companies try very hard to support their existing customers and send out a postcard or letter informing them of all upgrades to their existing equipment. That is how I learned of my Freedom upgrade for my N24C, and I am happy that I upgraded. Now I'm excited about the SmartSound2 software upgrade. Third place to look is to ask of other AB users on this website. I'm sure that someone will chime in within a few minutes. Glad you joined us. Guest guest
Yes, you certainly need to speak with your Audi, Michele. The upgrade to the Auria is the Harmony. It can be very expensive. I did mangage to get mine for less than $1000 but my Auria was only a bit over a year old. The cost of the upgrade was worth it to me but I don't hear " profoundly " better. I distinguish more individual frequencies than before. Voices are a bit " fuller " . But that's about it. I don't understand speech any better than before, and, while music is slightly more pleasant, it still is rarely enjoyable. Virg > hi > Where do I begin if I like to upgrade my CI ... Guest guest
Greetings Michele, The above responses are very correct, between your audi or the AB web site you should have no problem with the upgrade process. I received my Harmony in two days which was just in time for my annual MAPping appointment. I did not notice a huge improvement until I drove home and listened to my test music. It has made quite a difference and the quailty sounds are much more noticeable with me. I have also noticed I hear clearly at the supermarket public address squabble. Maybe that isn't a benefit :-) Please let us know how you made out. L in RI > > hi > Where do I begin if I like to upgrade my CI ...
