Guest guest
Definitely sounds like tinnitus to me!? It is very nerve wracking.? You might want to try what the doctor suggests because the tinnitus itself depresses me when I have a bad case?of it.???I am sorry you are having to deal with this on top of your other problems.? I know when?you finally get your meds regulated?you don't want to do anything to mess it up.? I hope you get better! Vickie Warrior, AL Implanted 3/10/08 Activated 4/16/08 ? Tinnitus Hi everyone, For the past several weeks I have been hearing what sounds to me like many people talking, but I can't understand the words. I don't know if this is tinnitus or another one of my voices. I only hear this at night when my CIs are off. Lately I've also been hearing a very high pitched tone (only at night when my CIs are off) that will not stop. It's painful to hear and gives me a headache. My CI surgeon was going to put me on Prednisone to help my tinnitus, but I refused due to the possible side effects of depression and mood swings. However, I'm strongly thinking about changing my mind because I haven't been able to get a decent night's sleep for several weeks now and I don't know how much more of this I can take. Guest guest
Vickie, Thanks! It's nice to know someone else understands how frustrating this is. My bipolar meds are working great. According to my psychiatrist, my moods are stabilizing nicely. That's another reason why I don't want to take Prednisone. I'm going to give my CI surgeon's suggestion a try to see if it helps. I'm also going to keep talk radio or smooth jazz on at a soft volume when I fall asleep to find out if that makes a difference as well. Guest guest
, I could do one better than using a white noise machine. I could simply tune a radio in between stations to create the same effect. Best of all, it's free. LOL! Mona

Guest guest
Hi, , I'm sorry you are dealing with this on top of everything else. I have this all the time. I also hear what sounds like someone pounding a hammer in my attic. All of this is with the CI off. It's maddening, I know. One thing you can try - silly as it seems, is to hum or sing. Some use a meditation word. This, at least, is a little distracting, and is better than the uncalled sounds. Hope this helps. Guest guest
All my life my tinnitus was always just soft bells ringing, and even then it only happened occasionally.  After I was implanted I had an episode of tinnitus that sounded like jack hammers going off in my ear. The first time that happened I actually looked around to see if someone was doing some street work somewhere. LOL Anyway, that did go away once I was activated, but NOW, lately, I've been having someone send messages in morse code in my ear using the old fashion...oh shoot, I can't remember what it is called...you know, where they click out the messages on this little machine.  Oh dear....my age is showing.   Of course, I only hear it when it is quiet like when I want to go to sleep. But it isn't loud enough to bother me.....yet.  ________________________________ From: " Flashwun@... Guest guest
Jackie, That's a good idea! I'll have to give that a try to see how well it works. By the way, another sound I hear is that of a car horn honking repeatedly. However, I can't tell if this is tinnitus or not since I always hear it whenever I'm manic (due to my bipolar) whether my CIs are on or off. > Hi, , I'm sorry you are dealing with this on top of everything else. > I have this all the time. Guest guest
I wanted to add that my psychiatrist and therapist both think that the car horn I hear is another auditory hallucination of mine. I don't know if it is or not since I hear it whenever my CIs are on or off. Hmmm. Guest guest
- I guess some of your sounds could be a result of your bipolar, but I have to tell you..I hear so many different sounds all the time and I haven't been diagnosed with auditory hallucination. (Although my husband would disagree, as I often tell him I absolutely heard him say ok to my getting a 5 carat diamond! LOL) I do have depression, but it's been controlled for @ 15 years and I'm (questionably!) stable. I get a band playing, hammers pounding, high frequency beeps as though I'm having a hearing test, and other miscellaneous sounds. I've always had it. So it's hard to say WHAT your tinnitus is a result of. Whatever the cause - it's so darned annoying! Hang in there! Jackie <smiles> **************Join ChristianMingle.com® FREE! Guest guest
I had to laugh Jackie, reading your email. Then I remembered what happened to me last night. I had put my dinner in the microwave to reheat, and when the timer went off I got my meal out of the microwave and sat in the family room to eat. After a few minutes I heard this beep, but by the time I tried to tune into the sound to see what it was, it stopped. The next time it happened a few minutes later, I thought, " oh, a new tinnitus sound, lovely " . Then a few minutes later it started again, and it happened to be between sounds on the t.v., and I realized, oops, its the timer on the stove!! About that time my husband says to me, , you forgot to turn off the timer. He was looking at me kind of funny, like, " do you have your ears in or what? " What makes me sad is that my husband is now experiencing tinnitus. He tells me that it started when he and our son went shooting and they forgot their ear plugs. The ringing started after they shot this one gun, and so he knows that is what caused it. He tells me that it is getting worse, happening more often now. I think he should have his hearing tested to see if he should be considering a hearing aid. I know it won't stop the tinnitus, but at least if he has a hearing loss (which I am starting to think he does because he is asking " what? " a lot more often), then the HA will help mask the sound during the day. Oy vey, another hearing aid expense.  ________________________________ From: " Flashwun@... Guest guest
Jackie, You're exactly right about how annoying it is. The only consolation I have is that my tinnitus decreased from hearing 8 sounds to 4. However, each of them do a number on my patience. At least when I hear my " regular " voices, they are understandable.
Guest guest
When I started hearing the sound of many people talking and not understanding the words, I panicked because I thought I was having another manic/psychotic episode which is a symptom of my bipolar. Needless to say, I was relieved to find out that this was not the case. I take an antipsychotic for my voices, so what didn't make sense to me was how it helped all of my other voices except for this one.
Guest guest
Hey, - hopefully your hubby's tinnitis is temporary. Sometimes it lingers awhile, then goes away. Good luck in getting him to get a hearing test - men being men, ya' know? I mean - if he heard the timer and you weren't moving, why didn't HE turn it off???LOL I thought you were going to write that the beeping was your smoke alarm - that happens to me once in awhile, too. The timer on the stove is constant, but the microwave is intermittant - so I always check those things first. Believe me, the hearing aid expense is worth you not having to repeat yourself nine hundred times a day. It was bad enough with us - with men - they aren't listening the first 3 times to begin with! LOL (ducking from the men here!). Oy Vey is right! Jackie ) **************Join ChristianMingle.com® FREE! Meet Christian Singles in your area. Start now! Guest guest
Hi I was activated July 15th, and after several mappings, have a jet engine roaring tinnitus when processor is off, but also hear the same sound or whirring with processor on. This is constant and bothersome. Many say it goes away. Is this a common experience for many of you? I am pre-lingual and my hearing loss was high frequencies, so it very overwhelming now. Guest guest
Carolyn - there could be two things going on here. Tinnitus, and hearing the fan noise from a air conditioner. I experienced tinnitus after my surgery that was different than any other I had. It sounded like someone was using a jackhammer close by, and it was very loud. But after awhile it went away. This would explain the sound when the processor is off. The fan noise was the one thing I heard when I was activated, and the audiologist explained that I would be hearing the noise. I'm sitting in my office right now, and I'm hearing the noise as well, now that I'm thinking of it. But, after awhile, the noise just sort of moves to the background and you don't really notice it...and it doesn't drown out voices or other things you do want to listen to. I equate it to what normal hearing people do...they are able to ignore the sounds they don't want to hear, and listen to the sounds they do want to hear. With the CI, we are able to do more of that. I too had high frequency hearing loss since early childhood in my CI ear. You are still pretty young in your CI journey. It should go away after awhile. In particular, additional mappings, and learning more about the sensitivity and volume on your CI will help you experiement with what works for you. Best of luck!!  ________________________________ From: Carolyn1002 <carolyn1002@...> Sent: Thursday, September 24, 2009 3:31:38 PM Subject: Re: tinnitus  Hi I was activated July 15th, and after several mappings, have a jet engine roaring tinnitus when processor is off, but also hear the same sound or whirring with processor on.
