Guest guest
Walgreen's is a drug store that sells a lot of other things. WalMart is a mega store that sells everything and more. It also has a sister or brother company called " Sam's club " that charges a membership fee so you can go buy stuff by the caseload. Usually at higher prices than what the locals sell it for. Can never figure out the attraction of Sam's club. WalMart was started by Sam Walton in the midwest. He kept expanding and anytime a WalMart moves into an area, you can count on lots of smaller stores closing. Every WalMart has a hobby and craft section, and can put the smaller stores out of business. It usually sells fabric, yarn and other things like that, so the fabric stores suffer as well. Because of the volume of sales, WalMart can afford to lose money on some things because they make it up on others. They can lose money because in the long run they will force the higher priced competition out of business, and then they can charge what they want. They also discount designer labels, and carry their own line of things like dog food, cosmetics, personal hygiene things (Walmarts brand of shampoo, bath powder) etc. Many of the stores sell groceries as well. Recently they started a bank. One in our area, with their own credit cards, etc. Taking on Mastercard and Visa now. I'm sure somewhere along the line the Congress will stomp on them for being a monopoly, much as they stomped on Bill Gates for having a monopoly on computers. Meanwhile, the company is employee owned in that each employee gets stock in the company. I believe they do NOT allow unions in the store. At least that was what I heard last. So benefits might be sketchy. But if you're a student, retiree, etc. looking for a part time job, it's not a bad place to work. If you're the head of household it's a whole other thing. We had the first WalMart open in the city of Cleveland a few months back. They have been in the suburbs for ages, but this was a big woop de doo, having one in the city. They built in a really depressed area of the city, and had over 1,000 applications for the 100 jobs available. Which shows you how depressed the economy is in Cleveland. I'd bet it's WalMart, because they are already in China where they sell live fish in the store. Don't do that here, although they sell bait and rods and reels. Catch your own. > Yeah, Ted, but once Walmart takes over there will again be no > competition. > > Virg > > > Ahhh, I think I might have it wrong, . Guest guest
WalMart has the nasty habit of forcing its suppliers to sell goods at razor-thin margins and they review contracts constantly so suppliers are forced to cut costs more and more. Employees may " own " the company via stock but WM is notorious for its low pay and low-level benefits packages.
