Guest guest
Marco, It is not uncommon to hear only certain sounds with the first several mappings. And some of them are too loud. Have the audiologist set your maps so you can adjust UP and DOWN. You should not be all the way up or down on any of them. You may be noticing high pitched sounds because you haven't heard them in so long. High frequency hearing is often the first to go. So all these sounds are new to you. That said, there is a learning curve to hearing with an implant. Your brain needs to adjust to hearing sound this new way. It was about 3 months before I ever heard all the things around me and comfortably. But you must wear the processor all the time you are awake, because you never know when your brain is going to have that " A HA! " moment where you finally realize that THIS is what sound is like through a processor. I was in school at the time when it happened to me. Someone in the back of the class made a comment, and I wasn't looking at her, I wasn't even paying attention, but realized that I HEAR AND UNDERSTOOD EVERYTHING SHE SAID. No lipreading, etc. That's when it all fell into place. So give yourself time, and practice and persevere. It's not like putting on a hearing aid, your brain needs to learn how to hear with an implant. Each mapping will make things better. Hang in there. Good luck, I have been having a hard time not knowing if I am supposed to be hearing the way I am hearing through this CI . I first wore a hearing aid when I was 5 years old and that was 40 years ago. I have been told it will improve and will probably be much better after three months, but right now I am feeling a little dissatisfied about what I am hearing because it is only sounding either quite soft ____________________________________________________________ Penny Stock Soaring 3000% Sign up for Free to find out what the next 3000% Stock Winner is! http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3141/4e6bf7928cfeb437304st01duc
Guest guest
Thankyou for sharing that with me ,now I know that it is okay for me to be hearing this way . With up and down do you mean the volume ? Or do you mean the pitch ? Because I can adjust the volume . I also just want to switch off that long beep that comes on when I first put it on and also when I adjust the volume . cheers M. > > Marco, > It is not uncommon to hear only certain sounds with the first several > mappings. Guest guest
Marco, If you have a Nucleus 5 implant, you can adjust both the volume (how loud a sound is) and the sensitivity (how large an area you are hearing from). This on all 4 channels. Volume, means how loud it is, not the pitch. The beep is to let you know you have switched from one program to another. It can be anywhere from 1 to 4 beeps, depending on which map you are using. It should not be an overly long beep. Just a few seconds. If it's longer than that, mention it to the audiologist. I noticed that with the Nucleus 5, it will beep to let you know which map you are on when you first put it on. The Freedom doesn't do that. I always turn my processor on, then put it on my head. So it was a surprise that I'd hear 2 beeps when I put on the N5 processor. Thankyou for sharing that with me ,now I know that it is okay for me to be hearing this way . Guest guest
, Yes I have the N5 I have only got the everyday setting at the moment . The long beep is NOT the signal coming from the processor ,yes those beeps are there as signals in the processor. The beeps are softer and distinct. I am hearing something else! I think I am hearing the loudness of things around me ??? It happens when I first attach the coil and the sound starts to fire off and I know that it is switched on . It does sound like a long humming beep or ring but it may be..........? I am hearing something which I am not recognizing ,and that is a natural or unnatural loud sound of things; machines maybe computers , fridges , humming. What is it ???? !!!! Later I will go to a quiet place and turn it on. It does seem to blend in after a while and not have the impact it first has when switching on . But I am not sure if my mapping is causing this.I will find out in a couple of days . Has anyone else experienced this ? Guest guest
Hi Marco It is normal for the implant to sound annoyingly loud for awhile after you first put it on, but it seams to diminish over time , I've had the N5 for 11 months now and I don't really notice it much any more.
