Hey everybody-

I am JUST curious to see what is all of your opinion on sign language.

I mean, do you consider it to be a crutch?

Words won't break my bones. Be brutally honest. I want to hear them

all. I look forward to hearing to all of your opinions.

:

I used signs before I got my CI in 1988 and today signs are a bridge between

me and my deaf friends. Signs are a language and a way to communicate.

For safety reasons, It might be wise to teach CI children some signs so you

can communicate with them when they are not wearing their speech processors.

I am not sure why you asked or what you mean by " crutch " but I will answer

anyway. I had been profoundly deaf since birth and grew up as oral deaf,

then I started to sign while I was at Gallaudet College. Even though I am

still oral deaf, signing is a nice back up communcation to reinforce what I

missed by lip reading alone.

My sister asked me the other day, asking me why am I still " forcing " my

daughters to sign to me if I can hear so well now. I told her that I would

never

force my kids to but they grew up signing to me and I was not implanted

until they were adult so it's a habit to them. I will never be able to

discriminate speech alone without lip reading because of the way my brain is

" wired "

-- visual communicator; sign language is still a blessing to have. After

all, we don't wear our CI 24/7, so it helps to have that skill during our " down

time. " .

Did my answer help?
