Fully Implantable...someday?

I read a very interesting article in Jan/Feb 2008 Technology Review

called " The Naked Ear " by Chorost. I believe you can get to

the article with the following link:

http://www.technologyreview.com/Biotech/19872/

The article focuses on fully implantable hearing aids but the author

is a CI recipient and I greatly appreciated his perspective on how

CI users must 'assemble' themselves in the morning and we do have

apparatus to carry around, charge, store etc.

Make no mistake about it - the CI is my very best friend and it

continues to change my life for the better each day. I lost my

hearing overnight (technically within a 36-hour period) exactly 1

year ago so I am still adjusting to life with a CI. I am sure there

are many advantages/disadvantages in trying to create a fully

implantable CI but the convenience of it all does sound quite

intriguing. Happy reading for those that are interested.

I totally agree with you. We love our implant (my daughter is 10 and

has been implanted since age 3), but look forward to improvements in the

core technology.

Here's what we wrote about this article...

Congrats on your implant -- very exciting.
