Guest guest
Hi everyone. I have come out of lurkdom to relate an interesting thing I was part of this afternoon. I belong to an ALDA chapter here in Northern California. The guest speaker at our meeting today was the CEO(a lady) of a deaf counseling, advocacy and referral organization. She wears a CI even though most all of her associates are deaf and use sign language, and seemed to hear quite well with it. Someone asked her about children and CI's, and she said she and the deaf community were against it because there was a 50% failure rate!!! When asked what her source was for that figure, she said her own experience with people. I, myself, thought it was extremely wrong and irresponsible to disseminate such obviously wrong information as accurate to folks who may be considering CI's. I also felt that this was not the place to get into a verbal argument with her since we meet at a cummunity center donated to us by her organization. This was the first CI recipient I have ever met that had anything bad to say about CI's. Irv in Ca. Guest guest
Wow- she needs to do more research!!! The failure rate is a lot lower than that Don't have the exact figures off the top of my head but will get them asap. Snoopy Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry MISINFORMATION Hi everyone. Guest guest
Maybe she needs to visit this group? Laurie in TN " As long as I live, I'll hear waterfalls, birds, and winds sing. Guest guest
Hi Snoopy! Please send this info my way to at info@.... There's been a lot of questions in online blogs about CI failure rates and I'd like to give folks some accurate information. What the speaker at the ALDA conference did was reprehensible. She blatantly lied about the failure rate and her attempt to justify her figure was ridiculous. I'm glad she was called on it and hope a fact sheet can be distributed with real facts at the next meeting to set everyone straight. Take care, a
Guest guest
I have to say that this is very upsetting that someone would give their opinion as fact. I lost my hearing only a year ago, so have never been part of the deaf community. But in that year I learned that the deaf community opposes to the CI, thinking it will " shrink " their community. I've also been told that they do not feel that being deaf is a handicap. I believe that it depends on one's circumstances. For me, I thought of it as a disability because I was not able to communicate except through writing. I didn't know sign language but was learning. For me it is a disability, because if you take away my CI, I have no way of communicating, unless again, with writing or some signing. I was told by the daughter of a deaf person NOT TO get a CI, but not told why, I found out later what she meant. Sorry for the soapbox, I could go on and on, but I am a huge advocate for the CI.
