Time for Bilateral, 1st Year

Hi everyone,

My 7 year old has worn a CI for about 4 yrs. now and a hearing aid in the other

year. She has a progressive loss in that right ear, and although has been a

candidate for a 2nd CI for a very long time now, up until now we didn't feel

there was a need because she did so well with her HA. I was wondering about what

the protocol looks like for a 2nd CI in terms of time. I mean with the first, it

was 6 wks after surgery for activation, 1 wk later for another mapping, 2

wks..then 1 month, 2 months..etc. Is getting a 2nd CI a quicker process than

getting the 1st before having to go back the following year?

We are currently living away from the US now and I'm just trying to think ahead

of how long we should plan a stay in the US before having to go back the

following year. I have asked my daughter's audiologist and am waiting a

response, but thought i'd ask your experiences about time for bilateral mappings

and the time it takes in between visits for that 1st year.

Thanks!

The mappings are the same or very similar for a second implant.

Although, I feel I progressed much more quickly the second time around

Mine was just a tad different, only because my Audiologist changed and the

processor has more capabilities. (My first Audi stopped working or moved

onto a different career- reason for the switch.) I actually at first felt

like the new audie wasn't being as aggressive at first but then soon

realized that I now have 4 programs instead of two so it allowed for her to

apply different maps to each program which allowed me to progress faster.

So, I think I met every other week and then once a month and then after 6

months, I went every 3 months. With my first CI, I progressed quickly and

actually went in twice a week for the first couple of weeks, then weekly,

bi-weekly then monthly and then quarterly. With both CI's I was recognizing

speech pretty well, it sounded a little funny and I think within two months,

I was understanding extremely well without the use lipreading or closed

captioning all that much.

Best of luck. I'm sure she will be extremely happy with the results. I

know I was/am ecstatic! I actually feel like a normal hearing person now J

Su,

Each of the CI Centers does thing differently. You will have to rely on the

answers from the Center you are planning to use.

Good luck to your daughter. Hope she likes being bilateral as much as I do.

Happy Hearing!

Thanks to everyone who responded (and everyone else who contributes to this

group!) my daughter's audiologist is going to discuss it in their next meeting,

God-willing, and get back to me with a plan..i hope going for the 2nd CI is

worth it for my daughter.
