Guest guest
I would be interested to hear what people have to say about this as well. I'm experiencing similar, different circumstances, but I heard instantly when I was turned on, though after about 6 months, my hearing didn't seem to be as good. With that said, I've been told by the audiologists that my hearing scores are excellent. And actually they are, but I don't feel like I hear as well now as I did the first 6 months of having my implant turned on. Not Hearing: > Hey folks I need some advise. Guest guest
Personally, I dont think these " SmartSounds 2 " programmes are all they are cracked up to be. I dont have the feeling that I'm hearing any better, or any more, than I was with " Smartsounds 1 " . Is it just me? Ted F. > > Hey folks I need some advise. Guest guest
Ted - I'm curious what programs are you using or have used? I also, would like to clarify... the programing options Adro, ASC, Beam and Whisper. Have not changed. They are the same in SS1 And SS2 programing softwares. The only difference is that SS2 had the ability to combine 2 or 3 three of the SS options for specific environmental uses. (Everyday, Noise, Focus and Music). I wasn't in the clinical trails so can't comment much on them. But, I do know they have tested out various combinations and to see which environments they work or didn't work in. They have found that there are specific combinations that work for different people. I also, have heard that sometimes we just adjust to the different listening environments we don't notice a difference anymore. That's been the case with me. I find myself using the same program most of the time and rarely switching anymore. But, I'm trying out new options and talking with my audi and fine-tuning things that work for me. I think we also need to define " hearing better " and our expectations too. What is your CI history? Guest guest
Hello Kitty. I have had the C.I. for almost 3 years. I used Adro, Beam, Whisper and Sensitivity on the old SS1 programmes. Now on the new SS2 programmes, in slot 1 I have my OLD SS1 Adro. Slot 2 I have the new SS2 Adro+Beam. Slot 3 I have SS2 Adro+Whisper. In slot 4 I have SS2 Adro+Noise. I still find myself using Slot 1 most of the time, because I hadn't noticed any great benefits with Slot 2. I use Slot 4 Adro/Noise, in noisy situations, but can't say that I hear any better than before. My definition of " hearing better " is that with the new SS2 programmes, I dont hear any clearer, or comprehend any more than I did with SS1 programming. There may be that small a difference between SS1 and SS2 that my perceptions of them arent noticeable to me. Others will always vary in opinions. Its just that when something is touted as NEW, especially in this computer age we live in, I would expect to hear some noticeable differences/changes, i.e. I would expect to hear BETTER than before when I was just using the OLD technology. Don't misunderstand me though, I am grateful for what I do hear and I think I hear pretty well with one C.I. and a H/A. But there is always room for improvement, while I am under 100% :-) Ted F. > > Ted - I'm curious what programs are you using or have used? > > I also, would like to clarify... the programing options Adro, ASC, Beam > and Whisper. Guest guest
I want to thank all of you for your advise. My audiologist is still out of the office for the holiday. I am pretty sure that she will want me to come in when she gets back. So I will keep you all posted on what happens. Thanks again for the advise most of you said the same thing that I needed a new map. Patsy **************One site keeps you connected to all your email: AOL Mail, Gmail, and Mail. Try it now. Guest guest
Hi Patsy and Nina, What you need to do is go get another mapping. Your hearing changes, and so getting a mapping at least once a year, whether you feel you need it or not, is always a wise decision. I just got mapped, and found out there were some upgrades and changes to the Freedom processor. I had one map that had ADRO, Auto Sens, and something else on it, but it was set and I was not able to adjust either sensitivity or volume with the old map. Now, you can adjust both. Found that out by going for a mapping. And I even had the audiologist put ACE on one of the slots. A very slow ACE program, because I've only used SPEAK in the 12 years I've been implanted. Be interesting to see how I like that. I hear fine with SPEAK, but if I ever go bilateral, they will default to ACE for the mapping. So whenever you feel you are not hearing as well as you should, go for another mapping. Well worth it. It has been almost a year since I been in for a checkup. Lately I have been noticing that when people are talking behind me I can't hear them. This is really upsetting me, because I have been hearing people behind me from almost the beginning. I have tried changing the setting, changing the filter and even the batteries but nothing helps. ____________________________________________________________ Click here for help eliminating your debt. http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL2141/fc/PnY6rw1e83EcIHoG1godW4c6a2UcIvEHqraS\ VSNZ2gAlFK89L8vjt/
Guest guest
Hi Ted - thanks for the filling in the blanks. I'm just a year under you, and 3 months into my BI-CI journey. I noticed a huge difference between the two ears. I'm glad to hear that you appreciate your CI. Sounds like you have realistic expectations. Smile. After all we are considered bionic aren't we? Why not the same hearing Summers had??? Winks. (I wish!) One day, just one day! I asked about your background, as I didn't want to be giving you " NEWBIE " advice if you already knew. Grinning... Back on the subject, I do understand what you mean about the little differences. I guess, I celebrate those little recognitions as I NEVER experienced them before. I'm still working on getting speech recognition. I've been deaf for 30+ years with 10 year of speech recognition in my life time, before my hearing became suddenly/progressively worst. For me, each little recognition was a big thing for me. Not so much just the SS, but sound in general. For example... I've heard about other people describing different instruments in music. I've FINALLY for the first time in my life been able to focus on one instrument and follow it through a song and see how it plays, then focus on another one... It's amazing to be able to listen to music like that. Then just listening to the song itself. Smile. Good luck with your maps! I would suggest talking with your audi, if you can figure out what it is you are missing. I told mine, I felt like I was missing the high tones.. Or not enough volume etc. We came to discover I was getting too much volume. So, we finally turned it down and I was recognizing speech so much better. So, I hope you find something that brings you more clarity. Smile. You are right, there's ALWAYS room for improvements!!! Guest guest
Patsy, Sometimes after a mapping, I also feel like it isn't as good as it could be. What I did last time is have my audi put the results of the mapping on one processor and then put what I perceive as hearing better on the other processor so that I can try both out to see with which I actually hear better. Right now I am using the processor with MY results and next week I will try the one with the actual mapping results.... and I will try it for a full week unless it proves awful. It's worth a try. Guest guest
Carol, what do you mean? I understand " the results of the mapping, " but I do not know what you mean by " MY results. " Where are these " MY " results coming from? You are not doing your own programming, are you? Guest guest
No Judy, I am not doing my own mapping. " my results " are what I perceive as being able to hear better. My map gets tweaked up or down (even tho the dynamic range might change) with the comfort and threshold changing to suit my perception rather than what the computer says. When I try out the actual map that the computer says is better I will let you know how it sounds as compared to what I perceived as better. Happy Hearing!
