Wow! I've just started with this a week or so ago. I assumed it was

due either to my migraines or it was overtiredness. I get it mostly

just as I'm dropping off, also in the corner of my eye. How weird.

I've no idea what it is or why it comes, other than the suggestions

above. I'm not taking anything at all at present so can't put it down

to any supplements or meds. I too wonder if it will go away. Sorry I

can't be of more help.

You know this happens to me but I hadn't connected it with the thyroid

problem!! I can literally see in the dark from the light flashes I get

in both eyes. But then I am convinced that the high pressure I get in

my eyes is caused by my thyroid problems, though no-one seems to take

it seriously.

Went to see the doc yesterday, (mainly because the receptionist at the

docs had hysterics when she told me my blood test results were 5.9 for

cholesterol and insisted that I make an appointment there and then!)

she said I was over medicated and that she wanted to reduce my dosage

of Levothyroxine.

She said I was Hyperthyroid!! I told her not to be silly as I would

have lost weight had I been hyper!!

I reminded her that I'm going to see an endo on the 15th and she just

gave me some painkillers.

Still she reckons that the swollen, painful ankles are NOT a symptom of

Hypo!!

It is so weird when today I was talking to one of the volunteers at the

museum and his wife is hypo and he said right away that I was suffering

from myxoedeoma (spelling?)he is blind by the way!

I really hate having to write to members who have no name. Please can you give yourself a name so I can write "Hi *****".

I don't wish to alarm you but this flashing as you describe it can be a real cause for concern. I would advise that you go immediately to an optician. These flashes can be a symptom of retinol tear or detachment. If this is the case, time is of the essence as retina needs to be tended to in the short term.

retinalFluorescein angiographyRetinal detachmentRetinal detachment repairRetinal dye injectionRetinal vessel occlusion

I don't think such flashing lights would be associated with hypothyroidism, although there are solme vision problems with this disease.

How long have you been on supplements and can you tell us what supplements these are, what dosage you are taking and when you last had an increase. It would also be good if you could post your last thyroid function blood tests, together with the reference range for each test. Your doctor will give you these if you ask. Tell us a little more about your symptoms and your medical history.

I'd be interested to know if anyone has had flashing lights in their eyes.I have it in my left eye outer edge and even see it when I'm asleep.I'm just on supplements at the moment as prescribed by Dr Peatfield and wondered if it will ever go away. Also can you just be treated on supplements and not move onto armour I can't remember what Dr Peatfield said. Thanks

Hi,

high cholesterol used to be as one of the indicators for thyroid disease

before the TSH became god. Docs would do better treating thyroid disease

properly instead of all the statins they hand out.

Now I'm properly treated I no longer have swollen ankles

Hi jdn,

Flashing lights are commonly part of the migraine syndrome- not all

migraines have raging headaches and are known as painless migraines, but do

have the visual disturbances. I had appalling traditional migraines twice a

week when I was very ill on T4 only treatment. When I got the right thyroid

treatment the migraines stopped- I have only had 2 mild ones in the past 7

years- both when I was under great stress. The visual disturbances appear to

me as a bright, flashing, twisting ribbon of light in my right eye ( I'm

left handed)

If you are not making enough thyroid hormones, then you will need thyroid

replacement. Supplements can be very helpful, and make the best of the

hormones available, but thyroid hormones are essential for life itself.

I'd be interested to know if anyone has had flashing lights in their

eyes.

I have it in my left eye outer edge and even see it when I'm asleep.

I'm just on supplements at the moment as prescribed by Dr Peatfield and

wondered if it will ever go away.

Also can you just be treated on supplements and not move onto armour I

can't remember what Dr Peatfield said.

Thanks

Hi Sheila,

Sorry its .

I'm on the following as prescribed by Dr Peatfield.

Started them first week in December 2007

One coenzyme q10

two 100g of Vitimin C

2 Nutri Adrenal Extra

2 Thyro complex (started off with one moved up to two last week)

2 Nutri thyroid, increasing up to 4 per day.

TSh results have been as follows. The lab ranges are between 0.50

and 4.50

Oct 2004 2.68

Oct 2006 2.82

Oct 2007 3.15

some of the symptoms. Depression, lethargy, dry eyes, puffy eyes,

blurred vision, pain in eyes, like a dull toothache, eyes tire easy.

(had eye test recently but glasses no different) the flashes of

vision started before I had eye test.

tinnitus,

loss of hair,

cold hands and cold feet,

can't lose weight,

low basel temp averages around 35.81

and lots of other symptoms.

Saw DR Peatfield 25th November, who said I was hypothyroid and had

adrenal failure and started me off on the following, but I thought

that was all I needed to start to feel better, so I;m rather

confused.

it can take months before you start to feel better. Some people it is within days/weeks others months/years. It took me about a year.

Hi

its like a rolling of light in my left eye on the outer edge. But

its only in that eye. I even see it happening in my sleep.

I have seen Dr P who has put me on these supplements.

Its very annoying and worrying.

I have been hypothyroid for about 20 years so I was on thyroxin (and OK on it for about 15 years), then I started to get all the symptoms back but with a normal low TSH so GP said I was OK. I was slowly getting worse for quite a while when I then discovered I could get a private test done. When this was done it showed I was not converting. Still no help from GP so went privately.

I was then given the T3 but had to start slowly. There was a slight improvement but I kept feeling OK then bad again then OK, then I changed to Armour, but it took a year before I was consistently feeling better.

Hi

I would take as high a dose of CoEnzymeQ10 as possible. takes 300 mgs. You would also be better increasing your Vitamin C to 1000mgs at least. Do you take any Selenium, because Selenium helps in the conversion of T4 to T3. You should take one table Selenium 200mcgs daily with a meal. Tiyr TSH certainly shows your TSH rising and again, had you been a resident in Germany or the US, you would already have been receiving treatment. But here in the UK - they have got it all wrong.

What Dr Peatfield has suggested for the moment are supplements to help boost your adrenals and thyroid function. If you are hypothyroid, this means that for whatever reason (and there are many) your thyroid is not producing the amount of hormone that needs to keep your body functioning. You WILL need to replace the missing thyroid hormones eventually because your body can't function without them. There is NOTHING that replaces these hormones except synthetic thyroxine (T4) or synthetic triiodothyronine (T3) or using the natural desiccated pigs thyroid (Armour Thyroid) that contains all the thyroid hormones, plus calcitonin. The supplements you are taking now DO boost your thyroid and hopefully, helps to stimulate it into better action, and this prepares the gland for a full thyroid hormone replacement eventually.

Once you become hypothyroid, you have to take thyroid hormone replacement for the rest of your life. Most people can live a very full, normal and healthy life once treated. Looking on the bright side, once you have been given a diagnosis by a NHS medical practitioners, this entitles you to free prescriptions (ALL prescriptions) for the rest of your life. So do try to get your GP to refer you to an endocrinologist.

What I would do is to write everything down in a letter (setting out the information that you wrote in your previous message). Take your basal temperature every morning before you get out of bed and before you have a drink) and list these temperatures for him too. I should imagine yours will be low. Normal is o98.4 degrees F and if yours is 97.8 or less, this shows your body 'thermostat' isn't working. You might have an even lower temperature than this. This will show your doctor your metabolism isn't working. Ask your GP in the letter for a full thyroid function test - that is TSH, Free T4, Free T3 and ask him to test your blood to see if you have antibodies to your thyroid. This could be a cause of you being hypothyroid. If you have other members in your family who have a thyroid problem, or if any members of your family have autoimmune disease, tell him that too.

I would tell him you have been reading a great deal about thyroid problems and because you recognised you could be a sufferer, you went to see a private doctor who diagnosed you as hypothyroid. I would not mention the adrenal recommendations at this time (though do so later) because GP's are not aware of an adrenal/thyroid connection. I would mention about the thyroid supplements he recommended to help boost your thyroid and the other supplements, but feel you now need full thyroid hormone replacement. Ask him, under the circumstances, if he would refer you to an endocrinologist who specialises in thyroid disease. Tell him you do not wish to see an endocrinologist who specialises in diabetes. You can be referred outside of your area if there is such a specialist at another hospital.

Writing all this in a letter to your GP means it has to go into your medical records, which is always a good thing in case your GP refuses you treatment or refuses you a referral and later it is found he should have done this.

Hope this helps.

Hi Sheila,

By how much did ’s

BP reduce by taking COQ10 and B3. I’m doing another 3 day monitor at the

moment and it doesn’t seem to have had much effect, neither have any of

the BP reducing drugs I have been prescribed in the past- they all seem to make

me feel sick and dizzy and don’t do much for my BP.

I would take as high a dose of CoEnzymeQ10 as possible.

Before he started CoenzymeQ10 and Vit.B3, and the reason wsas put on Statins is that his BP went up to 180 over 95 and hovered around that mark. It is now down to 154 over 80.

What dose are you taking , because, to get BP and cholesterol down, you do need large doses of both, not a maintenance dose..

I have raised BP and am at present taking, though reluctantly, a

small dose of a selective beta blocker.

Has anybody got any papers on the use of CoQ10 for the blood pressure

indication.?

Also I have raised LDL & low HDL Cholesterol. I've refused the

statins but accept treatment with Niacin (Vit B3). I'm also

prescribed fish oils (Omacor - omega3)

You should have porridge or muesli every single morning, this will a? give you a good start to your day but B) will mop up all that cholesterol that you want to get rid of and if you stick with a really healthy diet, your HDL will automatically go up - both of course (along with the HBP) are symptoms of hypoT that will reduce/raise without worry when you are properly medicated.

Luv nne Also I have raised LDL & low HDL Cholesterol. I've refused the statins but accept treatment with Niacin (Vit B3). I'm also prescribed fish oils (Omacor - omega3)

Just type CoEnzymeQ10 into Google and you will get a lot of information up. To lower BP and cholesterol, you need Q10 in a fairly high dose, my husband takes 300mgs and 350 mgs Niacin (Vit.B12). Just getting very worried. I ordered 6 bottles (cheaper by the dozen) from America and it left there on 23rd December. I have no idea where it is, and it wasn't insured and has now been without anything for 3 weeks. I cannot afford to lose so much money. I emailed the firm who gave me tracking details, but don't think they will be able to do anything considering it has gone.

Hi ,

I'm too having problems with high BP. I'm taking COQ10 too and it

doesn't seem to be having an effect yet.

Betablockers are contraindicated for hypos. I felt terrible when I was

taking them, but it was better than the almost continuous fullblown

migraines that they were prescribed to suppress.

small dose of a selective beta blocker.

>>>>>>>>>>>Has anybody got any papers on the use of CoQ10 for the blood

pressure

indication.?
