Maple syrup or sucanat would also work, as these are natural sweeteners. However, in terms of dealing with yeast, stevia would be the best choice, as it is a plant based sweetener and has no calories of significant amount. I know how tough it is to live on food stamps (I lived on them at one time too when I was a single mom) so I know it is hard to get good foods on your monthly allotment. Do the best you can.
