Dredging my brain fog here, but I vaguely recall that dieting (by which

I think it is assumed calorie restriction) can cause you to have low T3

& high RT3.

I agree that exercise can finish off tired adrenals.

RT3 oops yes that would have made me feel bad lol. Specially with low

thyroid hormones to start with.

I miss my dancing, ah well, get the old thyroid going again and I will

be out and about exercising again :).

Boost the adrenals eh:)

Thanks for thinking through that fog hun

I have been doing Yoga and reducing Carbohydrates with some success.

Whilst Yoga does leave me needing to go to bed somewhat earlier than

normal the benefits I have got (flexibility, less pain, signed off at

physio) are more than worth it.

I have been following a adequate protien diet, there are a fair few out

there like the Zone, India and Neris Idiot Proof Diet, Rose Elliot,

South Beach Diet etc. I have felt much better and lost 2 stone in a

year which, for me, has been nothing short of spectacular.

I do on occasion get a big long walk in but anything over 10 miles

needs a couple of days recovery ....

This is all starting to make perfect sense now. I was put on a

diet at age 8 as I was obese (perhaps I was self medicating a low

thyroid even then) but obviously the yo yo dieting I have done until

I found overeaters anonymouse 3 years ago has played havoc with my

T3.

I tried Bella's test yesterday before I went for a walk and my

temperature was normal pre and post walk so the adrenals were not

put under stress.

I did do a gym referral last year and joined in december but my

energy to go has got less - perhaps that sort of exercise stresses

the adrenals - find it difficult to assess as I do still try

and 'push' myself.

I just don't want to get obese again after all these years

fighting ....

Yeah these things make awful sense with hindsight, don't they? So many

bits of the jigsaw are falling into place for me and I feel quite glum

about it at times.

Re the dieting part, I was on constant starvation diets from when I was

a small child onwards, not because I was fat, but because my mother,

who had (has) immense issues, decided that I was fat (I wasn't. The

photos prove it). I flaming well am now, though.

Hi Rosie

Until you get the full thyroid hormone your body requires, it is useless to diet as with low metabolism, you are unable to burn off any calories. Why stay miserable when you can enjoy your food. You must, however, be careful what you eat, and don't eat too many carbs, but this is a fact.

Hi Dawn

I have been dieting with Slimming World for some 7 months now. I have lost 2stone 9lbs, which has been a tremendous struggle. The last 7 months have been awful, despite eating less and sticking to the diet, the pounds were at times so difficult to shed, but so easy to go back on again.

The point I wanted to make was when I first started the diet and was losing on average 2lbs per week, I felt extremely tired, very depressed and generally unwell, despite the healthy eating. In the early stages of this diet, I was so depressed that I was seriously thinking of committing suicide. Now that the weight loss has slowed down considerably, I am feeling much better. However, if I lose more than 1lb per week, my hypo symptoms return.

Another point is why are there no guidelines for losing weight safely if you are hypo. The doctors are always urging us to lose weight, but they fail to recognise that dieting can be dangerous to our health. Why not give a small supplement of T3 to compensate for the loss caused by weight reduction. Luv .

I was just reading a thread where Bella states that dieting andexercise can finish off tired adrenals. This got me thinking becauseEVERY time I have gone on a diet since I was hypo I always get a coldor flu or feel terrible in general so I stop doing it(too breathlessto walk at all now anyway but in the past I exercised). However withmy being overweight and fatigued the doc always recommends I loseweight and take some exercise. I have read elsewhere that dieting whenhypothyroid should not be done as it is dangerous, do you think thisis because of the adrenal problems in our illness?God blessDawn
