i was asked to do liquids a week before my banding and i was on

clear liquids for a week, then mushy liquids for two weeks. after a

group meeting with those banded or bypassed for 3-4 weeks we reviewed

a good diet starting with soft foods. everyone was told which foods

sometimes give a problem (e..g. chicken) at first, and which would be

easier to start with (e.g. shrimp or fish) and do very careful

eating. i lost a lot for the three weeks on liquids. started losing

more slowly on food. but i never had any real problems, until i ate

mindlessly and met up with the slime.

Some have all patients do liquids for a week or two before banding.

Some just have some patients do it, depending on what liver problems

they expect to find. Some don't do it at all.

Now THAT is weird. I've never heard of any doc who didn't have people

doing liquids for at least two weeks. At least a week of clears, a

week of fulls. Then softs. Some make those periods of

clear/full/soft go up to six weeks or so.

Sure, just like all other docs are. But the post-op from your doc is

the first I've ever heard of something that strange.

No, why?

You are freezing and it's 108 here in Australia. I'm sweating off the pounds. I

didn't have to do any pre liquid diet prior to banding and was told I could

consume anything that would fit through a straw for 2 weeks afterwards and then

on mushies. Yes, all doctors are different.

I was told that going on liquids - 1-2 weeks before banding was specifically so

that your liver would shrink (along with about a 10 lb weight loss) and by doing

this you minimized the risk of injury (to the liver) during banding surgery.

The program at Northwest Weight Loss Surgery in Everett Wa is to have liquids

for the first week (translated as anything that you could sip through a straw)

and then follow by one week of soft food. The only meats allowed on the soft

food portion are fish and ground beef, if very tender. They told me that they

are using the newest lapband and that the previous bands required a longer

liquid diet than the new band. The thing that confuses me though is that they

says that this phase is not intended for weight loss but to ensure you are

healed well prior to introduing solids. The only way you could not lose weight

on a liquid diet is if you are consuming high calorie liquids. I have my one

week follow-up with surgeon

today so I will add this to my list of quiestions for him.

I was just wondering....

Hello everyone.

I was just wondering something. I have read posts where before someone gets

banded, they have to drink liquids for awhile. I didn't have to do that and

after I had the surgery, my surgeon just told me to eat soft foods for a couple

of days. I have a friend who's in my online support group for trach-wearers

who got banded in Iowa. had to do the pre-band liquid diet and after

she got banded, she had to do the post-op liquid diet. Are all bariatric

doctors different like this? Also, have everyone watched " Big Medicine " on TLC?

Okay everyone. Thanks for the input on my question. As I said before, I

didn't have to do a pre-op or post-op liquid diet. I did have to take 6 months

of

classes at Ohio State University on nutrition, exercise, healthy living and

the mental aspect of losing weight for my insurance co to pay for the

surgery. Then after that was over with, I had to take classes for a month on

intense

nutrition. Now that was interesting and informative. By the way, all these

classes were on Monday evenings and most of the classes were geared toward

the gastric bypass, not to many geared toward the Lapband. Even my surgeon told

me that he didn't do to many Lapbands and if I wasn't happy with the

slowness of the weight loss, he would remove the Lapband and do the gastric. I

said

no considering I'd already gone through one extreme surgery, the trach.

I was on a liquid diet two weeks prior to surgery and then after

surgery for about a week and then slowly worked my way back to

regular food over the next 4-6 weeks. But yes I think every doc is

different. I have had friends who have had this surgery who didn't

have to do many of the things I did before surgery

i think its great that they made you get all that education.

we had some. my insurance only made me have a 6 month dr supervised

weight loss program before i did it -- like the previous 50 years of

dieting didnt count.

most of the duke info is gastric bypass, so when i attended i had to

be the conscience of the lapbanders and ask a lot of questions. at my

las tvisit i saw my surgeon and he did admit that usually by year 2

the lapband folks were at the same place as the bypass folks, and

beyond that the bandsters tended to keep off the weight better than

the bypassed. .....so you wonder why they still call the bypass the

gold standard (they get more gold from it!!).
