Adrenal Glandular extracts - What are the signs you are taking too much?

Happy New Year to everyone!

I recently did an adrenal stress test and found I was suffering from

adrenal fatigue. So, I decided to take an adrenal cortex extract.

I stopped my 100mg of T4 for 5 days, started taking the adrenal

extract, increasing the dose and then re-introduced the T4.

How do I know if I am taking too much adrenal extract? Or too much T4?

Do I go from being hypo to hyper? What are the symptoms.

I haven't noticed any improvement in my fatigue levels, but maybe I

have to try this for a few months?

My pulse and temperature are unchanged.

Thanks for your help!

Hi ,

Well you should be feeling an improvement/something, but there are

so many factors which can affect it! First 100 mcg T4 seems a smallish dose

especially for a man, so maybe there is room for a small dose increase to

see if that helps. What were your last TSH, free T4(and hopefully free T3)?

If you are not getting enough T4 then you can't convert ( if you can) to T3,

which is the active hormone.

Then there is the problem -can you convert T4 to T3? If they don't do the

free T3 test then you'll never find out.

Recent test results in december 2007:

Free T4 is 19.01 (range is 9.0-19.1)

TSH is 0.35 (range is 0.4-4.0)

In sep 2007 my Free T3 was 5.4 (range is 4.0-6.8)

I have been on these adrenal glandulars for 2 weeks now and I have

certainly noticed an improvement in my energy levels and general

wellbeing. I am now back to my full 100mg of T4 and 4 tablets daily of

the adrenal extract (2 x morning, 2 x lunch).

I have been monitoring my morning/evening pulse and temperatures and

have noticed in the past 2 days my evening pulse has shot up from an

average of 65 to 85! Obviously this is having an negative impact on my

sleep. I am either thyroxic or am taking too much of the adrenal

extract. I am a little worried that I may be taking either TOO MUCH T4

or TOO MUCH ADRENAL EXTRACT. However, I am unsure about which one to

cut back on. My gut feeling is to cut back the T4 to 50mg. I was off

the T4 for 6 days just before i started taking the adrenal extract and

i felt awful, so i am fearful of doing that.

I have read up on Peatfield's book, but it doesn't go into too much

detail.

Do you have any ideas or recommendations?

My GP told me to try the adreanal cortex supplements for 2 weeks

(seems too short to me) and if i saw no improvement to go on HC for 2

months (12.5mg per day).

thanks

Hi Sorry to but in and I am no expert but my test results were similar to yours T4 19 TSH 0.69 This seems to be the opposite to most people. I found I can not convert t4 to t3 and this could be your problem as well. Just a thought but again I am not an expert. Your Free T4 is right at the top of the range - didn't they do a Free T3 test in December. A top of the range FT4 could mean your thyroxine is not converting as it was before for some reason. Without a Free T3 test, you cannot tell. > > I have been on these adrenal glandulars for 2 weeks now and I have> certainly noticed an improvement in my energy levels and general> wellbeing. Going up to 4 tablets of Nutri Adrenal Extra in 2 weeks is FAR too quick and I think you are experiencing the effects of too much adrenalin. Stop them altogether for a couple of days and then cut your dose right back to 1 with breakfast and another with your lunch. See if that helps you sleep better and stops the increased pulse bpm.> > I have read up on Peatfield's book, but it doesn't go into too much> detail.> > Do you have any ideas or recommendations?> > My GP told me to try the adreanal cortex supplements for 2 weeks> (seems too short to me) and if i saw no improvement to go on HC for 2> months (12.5mg per day).

I really think your symptoms could be caused through too high a dose of NAE . Let us know how you feel after cutting back the dose. After a couple of weeks, you can then increase it by one tablet and stay oln 3 tablets for at least 3 to 4 weeks before even thinking about increasing it again.

Hi ,

As your T4 is at the top of the range and you feel that you may be

thyrotoxic ( sleepless if you weren't before is a good indicator) you might

like to consider a reduction in the T4, you are not taking much anyway ( a

full replacement dose is around 150mcg) it may turn out that you have an

adrenal problem rather than a thyroid one. After all the whole endocrine

system is interlinked. You'll only know if you try!

/ Bella,

Thanks for your useful input - it's great to have a second opinion. I

may well have to go on HC, but I would hope it would be just as a

" crutch " for a few months. However, for the time being I think I will

reduce the dose of adrenal cortex to 2-a-day and monitor for a couple

of weeks. I should be happy that I am slowly getting better..

The choice of medication is so wide - T4,T3, Armour, Adrenal

Glandulars, Hydrocortisone - it can be tricky to get right

combination. And everyone is different! I have the feeling the medical

profession just doesn't want the hassle of having to think about

anything but T4!
