Guest guest
You guys singing songs in favor of iodine. But are you all deficient in iodine? Why? I am told that you in the US eat a lot of common salt. I assume your salt has iodine mixed in it? So why should you be deficient in iodine? Excess of it would do thyroditis. Guest guest
Ratan, I am curious as to why you are here if you do not think that pretty much everyone needs additional iodine. That's kind of what this group is all about. As I understand it, you would have to eat 20 tsp a day of iodized salt to get the amount of iodine that is needed just for a maintenance dose. To answer some of your basic questions about why we all feel that we need iodine, you might check the "links" and "files" categories on the iodine group page. I highly recommend Dr. Brownstein's book, "Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It." What country do you live in? I doubt if many of us have any real idea of how much iodine we eat per day, without supplementation. Parts of the country are iodine sufficient. But, when we go to the grocery store, we don't even know what country the produce we buy is coming from. I guess, if we live in an iodine sufficient area, then go to a farmer's market, then we know we are probably getting iodine sufficient food. If sources are correct, the Japanes get about 12.5 mg of iodine in their average diet. If we depend on salt alone, it is probably only calibrated to give the average person around 125 mcg of iodine per day. That's assuming we use iodized salt. 125 mcg may be enough to prevent goiter, but the idea that other parts of the body need it too has never even been addressed by our public health entitites. We think it does more than help with the thyroid. It also helps with immunity, fights cancer, and has other functions in the body. I believe thyroiditis caused by excessive iodine only happens rarely. Most people can tolerate quite a bit of iodine. As Dr. Derry put it, once you start taking iodine, for about the first two weeks the thyroid soaks it up. Then it goes other places it's needed by the body.
