Wow guys - now this really scares the crap out of me - as most of you know, I

have been on antibiotics since September (with only a few weeks rest between

treatments & doc visits) due to chronic sinusitis and the two subsequesnt

surgeries I had in Nov & Dec. I am still on them - I went to the ENT on Tues

and he is sending me for another cat scan tomorrow. If they are backed up again

he may need to operate again to clean them out and then he will culture the

stuff to get to the bottom on these infections. (why they did not culture them

the first 2 operations I will never know-probably an HMO issue). I am in a lot

of pain right now due to the sinus infection again and he is concerned that a

hole has opened from my sinuses to my mouth where my wisdom teeth were pulled 15

years ago! What a nightmare. If this report is accurate about the cancer issue

then I am screwed so to speak (pardon my words but I am freaking out). Not to

mention that my maternal Aunt is currently battling breast cancer now. sheeesh

- what gives here? please let me know your thoughts...

Shari,

I am just shocked beyond words that they did not culture anything the first two surgeries. Clearly, they just assumed a bacterial infection and tried to bang on it with antibiotics. I supposed that can be expected, but for the amount of suffering you have endured, you would have thought at least the second time around they would have been a little more determined to find out what they were dealing with. I guess I had thought you mentioned it was cultured, but just didn't know what the lab work said. It will be very interesting to find out what exactly this is. (Especially if it turns out to be fungus, and that same fungus was in your implants.

About the antibiotics....don't freak about this. Antibiotics are used every day, and will continue to be. Cancer is an immune system disease, based on the fact that people with healthy immune systems do not get cancer. Their immune systems destroy the cells before they can take hold. This was proved in several experiments where cancer cells were injected into healthy people and they did not get cancer. http://www.winstonsmith.net/cancerman.htm

So, your goal will be to keep your immune system as strong as you can get it. This will be a lifelong endeavor. You will have to try to get off the antibiotics as soon as possible (thus the incredible importance of having your infection cultured from the first surgery!) and then rebuild your immune system to the best of your ability.

Shari, don't lose hope. You will get there, one day at a time.

Shari,

I've learned that many times docs won't order certain procedures because they think it doesn't need to be done, but if you are persistant and push the reason you want things done with some good knowledge behind it they will do it. Just ask. It works. There will be an occasion they might say no, but if you just explain yourself usually i've found they will do it. You may have to pay, but if you get what you want it is worth it. You will walk out satisfied instead of guessing all the time. You must ask your docs. They will never know what you want or what your are thinking if you don't tell them.

Ask him/her why was culture not done first time. Tell them it should have been done etc. When you stand up for what you want you will be suprised at how much more of an effort they make.

Its okay. I was afraid too. Just have to get over the initial asking, then it will become easier.
