IWDL Tests .... Which Ones Should I Take?

Some advice please! I would like to get a thorough picture of my current thyroid situation prior to starting my Armour thyroid in 2 weeks time. My old GP TSH blood test (at 3.9) in January did not include TT4, FT3 or antibodies and it is unlikely I will be able to get these on request from my new GP, (certainly not in time for me to start my medication) and my Endo referral is taking an age. So, I was going to have some private tests done again with IWDL, having already had Adrenal Index (fatigue stage) and Candida (clear) done recently. My question is this… should I do the full Thyroid Function blood test (TSH, TT4, FT4, FT3, TPOAb and TgAb) alone, or support it with the T4 & T3 urine test? Also … can you advise any other tests that would be useful to have at this stage, prior to starting the Armour, in order to assess my progress later down the line? I have a lot of gynaey probs, so was wondering if some form of female hormone testing would be a good idea. I'm 37 so not yet menopausal (tho feel it some days!) I've been diagnosed with Adenomyosis and fibro-cystic breasts so have just started taking the Serenity natural progesterone cream. Finally, I have been on NAE for 4 weeks, and now take 4 a day. Initial ill effects wore off after the first 10 days and I seem to be coping nicely with 4. Will taking NAE effect any tests done now in a manner that will give me false results that I need to be aware of? Naturally, want to keep costs to minimum but also want to get best overall picture at this stage. Any advice gladly received. Thank you.

Hi , Reverse T3 is worth doing as well. Free T3 and Reverse T3

are looked at in conjunction with each other. Others probably have

more advice re other tests.

Hi

Seems to me you have done more than enough tests and you could spend a fortune getting absolutely nowhere. With your thyroid function, you need to get an up to date TSH, A Free T4, Free T3 and Reverse T3. Also, as you have not had an antibody test, it would be a good idea to see if the CAUSE of your hypothyroidism is because antibodies are gradually destroying your thyroid, so a one off to get them tested would be a good idea. As you have had the candida and adrenal tests done, you need not get them tested again and you are already treating them with NAE so they should be fine. From what you have written, I think the time for starting your Armour is now here and you shouldn't really encounter any problems. You have done your homework, and that is everything. Just make absolutely certain you have read fully and understand everything that is in our file "How to use Armour Thyroid" and if there is any part of that you don't understand, shout loudly, and somebody will come along to help you.

Thanks to everyone for their advice on this. Most helpful. I have

decided to take the full thyroid test from IWDL via Thyriod UK (very

good price) and add the reverse T3 to is so that I cover everything

including the antibodies, before starting the Armour.

Love this site ... never had so much support before! A heartfelt thx.

HI

You can do the IWDL test from our website and contact them direct. Go to www.tpa-uk.org.uk and then click on 'Hypothyroidism' - on the drop down Menu, click on "Tests and Treatment" and down at the bottom of the page that opens, you will see "24 hour urinary test" and you can order direct from there. You don't have to go elsewhere to get these tests.

Hi Sheila,

I've ordered directly from IWDL before for my Adrenal and Candida

tests, but if you order the Thyroid test and mention Thyroid UK you

can get a special test done at a much reduced rate that is very

comprehensive, covering TSH, TT4, FT4, FT3, TPOAb and TgAb. Obviously

it will cost more to add the reverse T3 also. However, my concern was

(and hence my original post) that this is still a blood test and NOT

the 24hour urine. Do you know if it is possible to test all the above

via urine as I have not seen this offered on the IWDL site - nor any

other private lab sites. Doing them all individually works out to be

immensely expensive!

I have written to them to ask whether their 24 hour urine test does include the tests you mention and will let you know their response. I think the test you are talking about IS the 24 hour urine test and not the blood test. I have also asked them for a discount for our members if they order through our website.

HI

I wrote to Genova Diagnostics Europe and asked them to clarify what the 24 hour Urine Test covers. I also asked for a discount for members who order their tests through our website in the same way that TUK get a discount. This is a response I have received this aftenroon.

Dear Sheila,

The Urine T3/T4 test only measures the conversion of T4 into T3.

The Total Thyroid Screen measures TSH, Total T4, Free T4, Free T3, Thyroglobulin & Peroxidase antibodies. Sample reports for both tests can be viewed in the Practitioner Section of our website www.iwdl.net

I have forwarded on your discount request to the MD for a response & he will be in contact shortly.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards

J Lindow, RAW Dip, mBANT

Hi Sheila,

Yes this feedback was as I expected. I spoke with IWDL first thing this morning before I saw your post and asked them about the urine test and was advised that only the FT4 and FT3 were tested, so I booked to have the blood test + rT3 tomorrow at midday at their lab in Surrey (I'm in Kent). I can't drive myself any distance nowadays so have to rely on my partner ferrying me around. Tomorrow he has a business meeting near IWDL – hence why he can take me up (oooh – a day out of the house, can't wait!). He's dropped my other test vials into IDWL for me in the past, so this time he'll get to take the sample up in its original packaging, he he !!!

It would be great if you can get an arrangement with IWDL for discounts for TPA members. Fingers crossed.

Do you think it necessary for me to have the urine test also, or will the bloods suffice?
