Guest guest
I emailed my Pharmacy about the " Rumors " going around here's what I got back from them: Dear Ms. xxxxx, Thank you for your question about thyroid replacement. I have not heard of any news concerning Armour Thyroid. My colleague, who is a specialist in Endocrinology, has also not heard any news pertaining to your question. My understanding is that Armour Thyroid is F.D.A. approved and certified by the United States Pharmacopeia (U.S.P.). The topic may be related to levothyroxine products which had to get FDA (US Food an Drug Administration) several years ago. I'd like to offer a little background information on thyroid products. Although thyroid replacement products have been available and used for many years, they did not have official FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approval. On August 14, 1997, the FDA asked all makers of thyroid drugs to get FDA approval for the drugs in order to continue marketing them. The FDA set a date of August 14, 2001 by which manufacturers who wish to continue marketing their products would need to have new drug applications (NDAs) approved by FDA (or at least submitted to FDA). Also, the FDA announced that it would require a gradual phase-out of unapproved levothyroxine products starting August 14, 2001. You may find the FDA's 'Talk Paper' on this topic to be of interest (www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/ANSWERS/2001/ANS01089.html). In the Talk Paper, the FDA states : 'Because there is no public health emergency that requires an immediate switch to the approved drugs, FDA has established a gradual phase out of distribution of the unapproved products to allow manufacturers of approved products to scale up to meet demand and to allow adequate time for patients and health care providers to make an orderly transition from unapproved to approved products.' Again, if you have any concerns about your thyroid treatment, please don't hesitate to discuss them with your own Kaiser Permanente clinician, who knows your medical history and has access to your detailed medical records. I hope this information is helpful. If you have any additional questions or concerns about your medications, please feel free to contact your Kaiser Permanente clinician or pharmacist (or the on- line pharmacist, through our Web site).
