Hi Dave

Nice to hear from you. Fabulous message from Will...

I would only add however that the Japanese have been consuming white rice for

quite a while, and so have

the Chinese. Therefore I would not say their white rice consumption is going up

per se. What is going up is

their consumption of hormone-injected meats and " trans " fats in the form of

sugary snacks. What is going down

is their consumption of traditional snacks, like red rice (rice with red beans)

and buckwheat noodles.

There is a daily TV program, a few hours long every day, where a group of

middle-aged and elderly ladies

are invited to the studio along with one doctor. The " compere " of the show,

nicknamed " Mina Monta "

tells us about the amazing associations between eating certain food items,

especially food items together,

to " prevent " all manner of disease. For example, he asks whether foods A, B or

C, and food combination

1, 2 or 3 is the key combination to prevent gallstones, etc., and the ladies in

the studio hold up numbered placards

with their vote. Then the doctor, who knows the right answer, also holds up his

placard to show the right answer.

Usually, their is a gasp of amazement all round, and then there is some

discussion of recent research supported by

graphs, showing us that the incidence of this or that problem really does drop

if you eat this or that. They also discuss

how the foods could be presented at the table to achieve the right balance.

Very often, " Mina Monta " puts his

hand into a large box with a " ? " mark on it to pull out the right answer, or

either removes the box entirely

to show small plates of food with the " magic combinations " hidden inside.

This show has been running on one TV channel for many years in Japan, and it is

now a " permanent " fixture

like the news or weather forecast. If we can believe the graphs and studies

touted on the show, then it

really is a mine of wonderful information. Note that nothing bad has been said

about white rice, and

even white sugar in small amounts was recently shown to assist liver metabolism,

with data to back it up.

(Indeed the Chinese, whose diet is also based on white rice and who do not shy

away from small amounts of

sugar, until recently had a very well-balanced diet because they consumed

moderate, sensible amounts of protein and

very large helpings of vegetables together with their rice (and they prefer

their food to be hot rather than

cold). I would venture that white rice and sugar only " rob " the body of its

store of vitamins and minerals when

consumed alone).

There are major problems with this TV show however. The first problem is that

it would be simply impossible to

remember, let alone consume, all the suggested food plate combinations every day

or even several times a week,

because the list of " discoveries " now runs into the thousands or tens of

thousands. The second problem is that

for the most part, the show does not address serious systemic disease

conditions, but rather " lighter " problems like

" stiff shoulders " , although I will say there have been exceptions. Thirdly, no

mention is made of the real culprit at the

root of increasing " adult disease " , which is the " modern lifestyle " with too

little sleep and exercise, consumption of

" trans " fats, etc. Fourthly, no mention is made of how these same foods could

possibly be used to treat systemic disease once it has set in, only how they

could be used for prevention. Fifthly, nothing is said about the use of herbs

to treat

serious disease as an alternative to radical surgery and drug treatment,

allowing the viewer to tacitly assume

that there is no alternative. The guest doctor of course " knows nothing " about

that either, or at least the topic is

never raised. I did telephone the TV station to raise these points and they

listened sympathetically (albeit

somewhat incredulously), but of course no changes were made.

In Japan, most medical treatment is dispensed by huge " university hospitals " .

It is an accepted fact that the huge

hospitals cannot and will not discuss " alternative " or " non-invasive " treatment

options, even when there are many

university studies to back up the success of food combinations and herbs to

treat disease. This is because only

standard medical procedures are covered by insurance. Therefore, non-standard

treatments and advice are in a

" grey area " populated by doubtful practitioners who also know nothing about the

wealth of solid university research on

food combinations and herbs to treat disease. That leaves the patient to do his

own research on what has been found out,

and very few people have the courage to assume responsibility for their own

treatment, nor the ability and time to do the necessary Internet searches to

find the key information (most of which is in English, of course).

Best,

Max

really the most important point is the addition of sugar with our

fats. This is really one of the biggest causes of the problem.
