This is wonderful news Glynis - but NO NO NO. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE 2 GRAINS FOR 10 WEEK. This is the problem with NHS doctors who are slowly coming to realise that desiccated thyroid extract might be the answer for their patients.

As Armour has T3, T2, T1, T0 and other natural thyroid hormones as well as T4, you have to be VERY careful when starting it. If you have preivously been on thyroxcine, no matter what amount, you could start with 1 grain and take that for 7 to 10 days. If no adverse effects, increase by another half grain and stay on that dose for 3 to 4 weeks - and again, if no adverse effects, increase by another half grain. Then you can stay on that dose until your doctor sees you again.

Be prepared that when you next do a blood test, it will show that your TSH is suppressed, your Free T4 and Free T3 are pretty much at the top of the reference range. If your doc. doesn't understand, then he will probably have a dickie fit and say you should lower your dose. If you have no feelings of dizziness, sweaty, palpitations and/or generally feeling weird and spaced out, then there is no idication for you to lower the dose whatsoever. You should increase the dosage by half a grain every 4 weeks until you do get these adverse reactions, because that is the only way to tell whether you actually are taking the right amount .

This really worries me when a doctor starts treating his patients with Armour for the first time, because they think it is just a case of deciding on what amount to try, and sticking with that, without giving the patient any form of guidance as to what effects she might expect.

Luv - Sheila

He's recommended that I take 2 grains for 10 weeks and then I have to go see him again.Oh goddess, I hope this works, I am getting desperate as I have had no relief from symptoms since I started taking Levothyroxine in 2000.

>>>>I take 2 grains for 10 weeks and then I have to go see him again.<<<<

The problem here is that taken that way you could well be quite ill with it and the first reaction would be that Armour does not suit you and your doctor would possibly even feel that Armour is no good for anyone.

In the first place it takes a long time to work up to two grains. I suggest you look in the files section to see how to start taking Armour.

Hi Sheila,

I thought from all that has been discussed on this board that that

wasn't right, but I have every intention of following the notes in the

files on taking Armour.

At least he is willing to prescribe Armour.

I am manging my GP very well at the moment. She actually put in the

referral letter that she was interested in alternative treatments to

Levothyroxine. I shall print off notes to take to her when I see her

next.

Thanks Lillian but I had already decided that I would check the files

and follow the advice on this board rather than try and replace the

synthetic with the natural as though it was the same thing.

The only thing I'm worried about is that I don't want to feel even

worse than I am now, even for a short period of time. I know that

sounds weird but my life has been so restricted this last 6 or 7 years

that I'm scared of being isolated again.

I've already notified my voluntary jobs that I will probably be a bit

erratic until I've sorted the right dose and things start to settle and

they have been brilliant about it (as usual!).

Hi glynisrose,

Brilliant! I hope the chemist doesn't take too long in getting

you Armour. My local Boots takes 5 weeks and charges me twice as much as

online pharmacy. Is this A NHS prescription/ if so gold dust!

and he's given me a prescription for Armour!!!!!! I thanked him and

said it was nice to meet a doctor that treated patients instead of

blood results! He said that was a really nice way of putting it.....

Hi Gill, I'm not at all offended, sorry if it sounded that way, I was

just trying to explain and of course my brain doesn't feed the words I

want to my fingers (or my gob for that matter!!) when I want them to

come..........

views and have similar leanings myself. I thought it was a typo and

Hi ,

Yes it is a NHS prescription and if I haven't recieved a call by Monday

I will be in there asking why they can't get it in two days as most

online pharmacies seem to manage to do this without too much of a

problem!!

I have fought this far and no-one is going to stop me now!!!
