Video: From FAT to fab: the rise of gastric surgery

Video interview with Sadie Cotton. Video by Georgie MabeeCustomers at

Snart's workplace, Jaynes Hairdressers, in Oundle.

Published Date: 10 November 2008

Diets and exercise work for many of us – but for some, the only way

to lose weight is to head for the operating table.

Jemma Walton reports on the rise of gastric surgery.

When Snart saw her wedding pictures she felt sick.

Because although she knew she was overweight, she hadn't realised she

was that overweight.

" I looked like a mammoth, " she said.

" This was in November 2004, and I weighed 23 stone, and was a size

32.

" I told myself that I was big, but wasn't prepared for what I saw.

" Flying out for our honeymoon, I couldn't get the seatbelt done up,

and the tray wouldn't pull down for me to eat off.

" I had chosen to ignore things like that, but you can't ignore the

way you look in a photo. "

(36), of Hillside Gardens, Wittering, had put on weight after

having two kids and, as she's a hairdresser, had to grab her meals on

the go.

" My weight just went up and up, she said.

" I tried every diet going – WeightWatchers, Slimming World, Slimfast –

I must have tried them all four times or more. And often I'd lose a

stone, but then I'd put it back on, plus another one. "

By February 2005, knew she had to make drastic changes to her

life. And when she read a magazine article on how Sharon Osbourne had

lost weight after having a gastric band fitted, she made an

appointment with her doctor.

She had her gastric band fitted in December 2005, and today weighs 12

stone, and is a size 12 on the top, a 14 on the bottom.
