Guest guest
I've almost given up trying to reply this morning ~ DoS attacks I think. Bob Are there trojans in the advertising on the site, perhaps? > > ...and way over mine too. I was not even lucky enough to study chemistry at school, and don't know what any of this means. Guest guest
Hi Sheila, The frieze along the wall of the Dorothy Hodgkin Building in Bristol contains the structures of proteins she disentangled by X-ray analysis ... brilliant work. This building stands on the site of the old 'Kodak' block. Back in the old days, they used film for X- rays...now you need a synchrotron [ not everybody has one :-) ] and a sophisticated digital camera that responds to X-rays. It makes the computing easier if the data is already digitised. Dorothy Hodgkin (her bust was in the foyer, if you recall) was the co- discoverer of the vit B12 structure [ but also penicillin, insulin etc ] and was awarded a Nobel prize for her work. With fluorescent proteins (eg, GFP green fluorescent protein), one can now visualise the internal workings of cells using ordinary (well, laser) light microscopy ~ a range of sizes x1000-10,000 less detailed than for X-rays working at the atomic/molecular scale. Weissbach was able to determine the co-enzyme nature of the cyanocobolamin, once the basic structure had been worked out. We still appear not to understand all of these associated reactions and where exactly they take place, either in the cells or the 'special' cells, neurons. Intrinsic factor is lost through an autoimmune process, hence the common problem(s) with autoimmnune thyroid diseases in that vit B12 is not replaced once this has happened (intrinsic factor is needed to get the vit B12 across the GI tract) .... the vit B12 level runs down slowly over the variable course of thyroid diseases. Got an autoimmune problem, got a vit B12 problem too? best wishes Bob > > ...and way over mine too. I was not even lucky enough to study chemistry at school, and don't know what any of this means. Guest guest
Hi , I can only point in the direction of the (easier) information if anyone wants to dig a little. The Weissbach (reflective) article contains some gems of information that don't usually get reported. Hence, it can be 'skimmed' for interest; miss out the difficult technical bits, if you want to. See the reply to Sheila on why vit B12 is lost, (not replaced) due to autoimmune diseases. best wishes Bob > Sometimes a lot of bobs articles go way over my head to!!!!
