High Dose Question

I've been taking Iodoral (and sometimes other, comparable products) in

varying doses for several months and doing reasonably well with it.

I have a high-dose potassium iodide (KI) product ( " No-Rad " ) that's

marketed as an " anti-radiation " pill. It's the sort of thing that

people were advised to keep on hand several years ago in case of

a " nuclear accident " or a " dirty bomb. " If one of those events

occurred, the idea was to take a high dose of KI for ten days and that

would protect you from getting your thyroid destroyed by radiation

because you would quickly saturate your thyroid with KI, so it couldn't

absorb irradiated iodine.

The tablets each contain 65 mg of KI, and the instructions are to take

two tablets (130 mg) per day for ten days, only in the case of imminent

nuclear exposure.

I've been wondering if there would be any benefit (or conversely any

particular risk) in taking this high dose for the short time-frame

recommended, thereby quickly saturating the thyroid with iodine. It

seems like this could be an advantage, because then if you resume a

moderate Iodoral dose (say 25 mg), your thyroid wouldn't need to grab

most of the KI in the Iodoral, but both the KI and the elemental Iodine

would be available to go to other tissues and organs, like the skin,

etc. If the thyroid were saturated and not taking most of the KI in

the regular dose of Iodoral, couldn't that be advantageous? Would

there be any particular risk in doing this?

I've occasionally taken one of the high-dose KI pills (65 mg), but I've

contemplated trying the two-pill dose for several days to see what

effect it might have. I just don't know whether this would be

adviseable or risky, or what.

Has anyone tried something like this? Or has anyone discussed this as

a possible approach with any of the iodine doctors?
