Hello Irene, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and had very bad stiffness too, I was given amytriptylene by the rheumatologist - and it did help a lot and Im still taking it though since taking thyroxine I have reduced it. Getting enough sleep is vital to me too, otherwise I get more aches and pains. Although, now Im getting a reasonable dose of thyroxine, still only 100 mcg but been on it for about a year, Im noticing that my aches are getting less - for example I had a lot of heel pain and went for a 2 mile walk with the 'kids' on sunday, it was great and I didnt start to be in pain, like I did last year! So I think Im getting there! I am planning to talk to my endo about a trial with T3 but dont know how he will react and really I think he will say you are doing ok on T4 so we will increase it again and see. And I think I might be one of the lucky ones that thyroxine works for, but I would love to lose weight and that's not happening on the T4 - it really goes against the grain when I was always so slim - a 12 til my 30s and then upped a bit in mid 14s and now, well I feel so fat but Ive tried diets and really I dont eat much - I know most people say that but I really dont binge on sweets or cakes, usually 2 meals a day and not much else, though I will admit to some alcohol, but it didnt make any difference when I went alcohol free and low cal or low carb!

I'm one of the people that think their Fibromyalgia is actually hypothyroidism. One of the symptoms I've had for the past 16 years is stiffness and pain through the night. Before I was prescribed anything to help I would wake up through the night in agony feeling like I'd dug the garden and been on a marathon the day before. Through the night it was like my body was a Vac Pak (you'll have seen the advert). When I got out of bed the next morning I was stiff head to toe, even my toes would feel like piano wires. For me, I had to work through this, like getting the lactic acid out of the muscles. By late morning I was more mobile but come late afternoon I would start to seize up again though it was always worst through the night and in the am. I've been on Tramadol and amitriptyline for 10 years and am mobile through the day but I must get my sleep. I'm sure these symptoms are to do with the thyroid not working in someway but haven't got to an Endo to confirm this as I haven't reached the magic 10.It's thought that if you don't get your delta sleep your muscles do not get the necessary repair work done. Some others think low magnesium can cause this as the body needs calcium to tighten the muscles and magnesium to relax the muscles. I've tried a multitude of things without much help but the pain killers do help me sleep which for me makes the difference. I'm hoping that by getting the thyroid balanced my symptons will go but 16 years of being stiff will take a bit of undoing. Does any of this sound familiar?Hope it's of use a good detox massage may help too, Irene
