Guest guest
Dear That's really inspiring; I hope your next three months are satisfying in that you recover shape, fitness and improved mental facilities as happens with mood changes during exercise. Taking the load off your hips, knees and feet will benefit the joints too. I hope you can add swimming to your regime for better overall fitness, as that allows 'no load' exercise for all those stressed joints. My M-I-L used to swim regularly in order to keep some level of fitness, even though carrying too much weight, and we don't know how long she was hypothyroid ~ far too long if the truth be known. I'm fairly sure Bill Gates was asking about male problems on the US ThyroidAbout forum some time back, so I don't think anyone is immune from these problems ~ and I understand it was mood not weight in that case. best wishes Bob > > Hi everyone and Sheila > > Have put photos of during and sort of after still have a way to go.. Guest guest
Completely inspiring , Fantastic well done. Something I can relate to as a previously keen exerciser and gym member, I really felt the benefits both mentally and physically. It's one of my greatest bug bears that I currently don't have the stamina to exercise, or get to the gym. I invested in a cross trainer at home to compensate, even that now gives me the wobbles for ages after. Good to read such an uplifting story. Hope you enjoy the gym, sure you will. x > > Hi everyone and Sheila > > Have put photos of during and sort of after still have a way to go but > >
Guest guest
Hi I have never had so many good wishes in one day! It was lovely to read all the feedback. When I look at my during photo I feel sick remembering how ill and depressed I felt. In that photo I was at the works away day 2007 and in the getting better it is the works away day 2008. Its not just the difference in my size but my face and overall wellbeing - I look so much happier. I saw a friend the other day I had not seen for a few months and she said you are getting back to your old self - not you are back but getting back. So I know I am getting there. But my doctor would not help me with adrenals and said I had to take exercise instead as it released a hormone similar to cortisone or whatever it is that would help just as well. She also felt that I could drop my dose to 100 from 150. But I am having a blood test first before I make any major decisions. My blood tests really did not reflect the severity of the symptoms that I was having to go from 11st 7 to 18st 7 in a period of 7 years and to feel so depressed. The first amount of weight I put on up to 14 stone was over about 5 years the other three stone was only about 18 months. I was scared to eat and just wanted to sleep all the time. I couldn't breath and was in hospital every year during the last three years. I have not had a chest infection since I went on thyroxine in October. I have been well all of the time. Except occasional stomach problems. Don't know what they have been and occasional times perhaps once a month for a few days when I felt a bit tired again. But apart from that the thyroxine is working for me and I count my lucky stars because from reading on the web site other people's stories I am very lucky. However if it had not been for the site and the people on here I don't think I would be where I am today. Thanks everyone. Luv > > Oh - what an inspiration - thanks so much for posting your 'before' - 'during' and 'getting better' photo's. If any of you have pictures to post to show us your progress - or even as you are right now, as a newbie, please do so. Guest guest
Hi Thanks for your reply and I am hoping that the exercise will do the final bit for me. I still get depressed and tired from time to time and mentioned this to my doctor who immediately gave me the prescription for exercise! She thinks that I am well now on my dose of thyroxine and that a little more weight loss and exercise are the only things that I need. So lets hope she is right, she has been up to now even though I have not always agreed with her! Will let you know how I get on. Guest guest
Hi Thanks for your reply. I class my self as so fortunate in that my thyroid problems are not as bad a many people on the site I am on 150 micrograms (what ever it is) and my doctor wants to reduce it to 100. The thyroxine has made such a difference to me mentally and physically I thought I was getting alzhimers at one point and started smoking again after stopping for 18 months! Stupid doctors I kept pestering just thought of me as a heart sink patient until I saw Dr who immediately spotted the problem, as I was about 3.8 TSH and only once 8 TSH. These stupid blood tests ruin peoples lives they are so unreliable. I must have been hypo for a long time as I was anemic with B12 and IRON. Well thank god that is all over and I am looking forward to my first visit to the gym. Will let you all know how it goes my first exercise for about 8 years! Guest guest
Hi I had been ill for a very long time I would estimate about 8+ years all in all. I had got used to eating very little because I was afraid of putting weight on. So ate like a mouse believe it or not. So once I started taking my thyroxine well not straight away after the first 3 months, I started to loose weight about half a stone a month. Because of the success it spurred me on to eat healthier. It was the first time in years that I had been able to actually loose weight when I dieted this was great! My dose is up to 150 but I am going to drop it if necessary now my bmi is much less to 100 (am having a blood test first!). I just cannot contemplate feeling the way I did before I feel sick when I look at the during photo remembering how ill I felt. Don't know which type of thyroid disease I have got though. How are you? Are you well on your dose? Luv > > > > Hi everyone and Sheila > > > > Have put photos of during and sort of after still have a way to go > but > > half way there now. Guest guest
Hi I told my doctor I had put it up to 150 about two months ago because I started to feel ill again. My daughter noticed it too and said its as if you have gone back two months! When I told the doctor I had done this and explained that I had been having the cold shivers, feeling tired etc etc again she was cross and said that 100 was a big dose and that she did not want me to carry on taking 150 I have ignored her basically but am having a blood test done tomorrow to keep her happy. I can understand her reasoning as my bmi has dropped so there is less of me to cope with but I cannot stand to feel ill again. I have had no palpatations my pulse just now is 80 but I am smoking and take inhalers and I am not fit at all. So I do not think I can be overdosing as my pulse would be over 80 and surely you would get symptoms. What do you think? Luv
Guest guest
, does your GP prescribe according to your weight, ie-the less the patient weighs, the less medication they need? My GP admitted to me that because I am so heavy (I am now 4 to 5 stone over the ideal chart weight thanks to hypoT), I could probably cope with a bigger dose. He's waiting for the blood test results first though. It could lead to a vicious circle effect if an effective dose while you are bigger is adjusted down to an ineffective level everytime you lose weight! Guest guest
100 mcgs is not a high dose at all - there are many who take 200mcgs - 250 mcgs and up to 300 mcgs. We are all different and your doctor should know this - but they don't do they? Have you considered that you might be suffering one of the 'associated conditions' that might be stopping your thyroxine from being absorbed by your body properly. Many people are OK when they first start taking levothyroxine, but then, after a few weeks, months, or even years, up pops another condition that stops the thyroid hormone from being absorbed properly. Look at these associated conditions on our website www.tpa-uk.org.uk under Hypothyroidism and read everything there is, and see if any of these might apply to you. luv - Sheila HiI told my doctor I had put it up to 150 about two months ago because Istarted to feel ill again. Guest guest
Hi Yes I think so. I am having my blood test today so I am hoping that it is no less than the last one which was tsh .07. I felt well at that time. However, a month or so later I started to feel less so and that is why I put my dose up without asking my doctor. Guest guest
Hi I did not think that it was a high dose and on 150 I felt it was quite a moderate dose and doing for me what I wanted - MAKING ME FEEL WELL - I am having a blood test this morning so I am hoping that the results are ok. I am going to look at the things you said in our files and perhaps you are right about that. I have been looking back at when all this started as I want to write up my story for the web site. When I was 28 I started lactating from my breasts and feeling tired and also started with fluid retention. I got up one morning looked in the mirror and my eyes were all swollen being the vain thing I was at that time it was a major catastrophy ha ha. I went to the doctors which resulted in a referal to the hospital. I went for a ct scan because after an xray they thought there was something wrong with my pituitary gland. Nothing came of it and that was when the doctor said eventually go home loose weight and start looking your age again. I just put up with how I felt started to take prozac went on fluid tablets and eventually became pregnant again and things seemed to be better for a few years, although the fluid retention and depression did not really get that much better. I have read about people when their thyroid is going down going through periods of up and down perhaps that is what happened and wonder if it is linked to any other disease. I don't know what was wrong with me at that time I all know is I felt bloody awful and I think the doctor thought I was putting it on. Also I could not loose weight I went from 9st 12lb to 11 half stone and went to a dietician and when I showed her what I had eaten for the week and she weighed me and I had not lost weight and even gained it one week she did not believe me either. Looking back now it makes me think was this my thyroid starting to go down or problems with my pituitary gland? Well I will look at your files. Thanks for all your help wish me luck for my test I have not taken my thyroid meds this morning and just hope the results are no less than las time which was .07 which was about six months ago. Guest guest
Hi Good luck with your doc visit; smoking affects the thyroid function. Guest guest
http://archinte.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/167/13/1428 " Conclusions These findings indicate that smoking is negatively associated with hypothyroidism but positively associated with hyperthyroidism. The associations with smoking cessation suggest that smoking may have reversible effects on thyroid function. Notably, we report for the first time, to our knowledge, a lower prevalence of overt hypothyroidism among current smokers. Guest guest
Hi I noticed that when I stopped smoking that is when my symptoms got worse I did not know if it was a coincidence but I definitely thought about it and then when I started smoking again things did improve a bit. So yes I think that there is a link and when I stop smoking again which I am going to do I will have to watch my tsh and symptoms as I will probably have to up my medication. I was in a conversation with Dr Derry when I first started taking my thyroxine and I mentioned this to him and he said that smoking raised the metabolism and helped with the symptoms. He said that quite often people only realised that they had a thyroid problem when they stopped smoking as they lost the crutch that was temporarily keeping them going. That is one reason I am afraid to stop smoking again! But I am going to. I need to because of my chest. Guest guest
Hi Yes as soon as I have written it I will send it. Lucky me today the doctor forgot to fill in the blood test form so the woman who comes from the lab asked me what I wanted testing so - I have asked for free t3 free t4 tsh and b12 did not want to go too mad. Will let you know the results as soon as they get them. Guest guest
Hi , is it a case of doctor not requesting them or doctor requesting them and the lab refusing to do them? If he's asking for them you need to ask him to contact lab and if he won't perhaps you could write a letter of complaint to the lab? I've seen Dr Toft's book (well more of a booklet really) in Boots and my local village chemist. Probably only available in chemists.
