My name is Jen. I live in Southern Indiana. I just had my LapBand put in

on Monday, May 12th. I’m feeling great and according to my scales, I’ve

lost 11 pounds since surgery. Which may seem like a lot for three days, but

I think it has to do with the clear liquid only diet the day before surgery,

no eating or drinking at all on the day of surgery, very little the day

after and yesterday I was only able to consume three protein drinks (110

cals each) and a drink that was 90 cals. I know I won’t loose 11 pounds

every three days, but I’m very happy with where I am.

Right now, my stomach feels full all the time (hence the reason I’ve not

been able to “eat” much). I’m assuming it’s from the air in my abdomen and

the swelling from surgery. Did anyone else have this problem?

A little about me, I was thin my whole life, able to eat anything I wanted,

never had to exercise. Then, at 20, I got pregnant and my metabolism

changed but my eating and exercise habits did not. Over the last 19 years,

I’ve gone from 150 pounds and a size 10 to 416 pounds and a size 38. I am

married with four kids. I’m really looking forward to being able to

participate in more family activities with my family.

Jen

Hi, Jen - welcome! Glad you're here!

you're right that your loss is from insufficient calories and

dehydration. a bit of this is ok, but you need to work hard to start

to get in needed calories asap, to support good healing and form good

scar tissue to hold the band in place, hopefully for a very long

time.

Remember that we are only looking for FAT loss- not temporary water

weight loss. This is artificial and rarely lasts. Please don't be

concerned whrn this temporary loss returns when you're able to eat

and drink adequately. we're not afetr tenporary loss, as tempting

as that always has been :-) We're looking only for a greadual

downwad trend, and there wll be lots of ups nd downs, and times of no

loss at all.

a good calorie goal for this time for women, asap, is about 2000 cal

a day. that will allow some good loss as well as good healing, even

before a good fill is reached, as long as we are starting the decent

daily exercise that is also needed.

you're swollen now, which is why you feel full and cannot get much

in. This should resolve within a few days. But even now, the absolute

mimimum daily fluid needed is 48 oz a day - and ideal is 80-100.

dehydration is a very bad thing in the post-op stage, especially. ALL

fluids count, and all " full liquids " .

If you're allowed protein drinks as you say, choose ones with much

better nutritin and fiber, please. You can also make your own with 2%

milk, cocoa (not sugar free), peanut butter, fruit, etc - whatever

you like. We are not trying to minimize calories, but to eat WELL,

enough for SAFE loss, and to meet nutriton needs for recovering our

health from years of obesity.

since you're on full liquids, you can also puree and thin most foods.

Things like the Chunky soups are good pureed smooth and thinned a

bit - choose ones with meat, beans, etc for the protein and fiber.

the Bean and Ham is good, and the chicken corn chowder is a favoriye

of mine. Have a cup's worth every 2-3 hrs if you can, or 1/2 cup

every 1-2 hrs, and more if possible. then, lots of good-calorie drink

between.

What type of wound care orders did you get?

Please stay in touch and Let us know how you're doing !

These qare the wound care orders i developd for my doc, and we have

had very few wound infections in the last 3 yrs since they have been

in use.

- no baths, hot tubs, swimming until wounds completely heled and ll

scabs off - usually 2-3 weeks

- daily shower using antibacterial soap to wash wounds. be sure to

use a fresh towel or paper towel, not the germ-laden damp sponge or

washcloth left in he sghowetr

- antibacterial ointment (bacitracin or polysporin, NOT neosporin)

onto wound 2-3 x a day, then a fresh NON-airtight bandage or band aid.

-

I'd suggest an adult chewable mutli-vit, which has the trace elements

that adults need. chewable kids vits are for kids, and have none of

the trace elements. Ones like the Centrum chewables - or a generic

identiacal version - are what i use and recommend. One extra daily

SMALL biotin is also a good idea, and will never hurt - ok to start

this when you're on soft foods. Be sure to wash the vits tru with a

full glass of fluid. the vit c in them is an acid, and has caused

coniderable damage when sitting in the pouch or against the stoma.

there are lots of the patient Ed materials I've written for my doc

and others here in the files that you might find useful. IMO, the

more knowledge we have, the better chance we have to do well!

Welcome to the journey of a lifetime, back to good health and being

an active part of your family! Lots of great people here to share

their experiences and knowledge to help you! we're all in this

together..

As a learning experience, Sandy, what's wrong with neosporin as

compared to the other two?

Dan, and others - Neosporin is well-known (for medical people)to

cause many allergic reactions, and each use increases the possibility

of a reaction. It has not been recommended by knowledgeable medical

people for at least 8-10 yrs, especially for surgical wounds.

the neomycin that is the effective anti-bacterial in it is highly

allergic and not even very effective.

Polysporin and bacitracin oimtments have far safer and far more

effective meds.

it's good, especially with kids, to wash wounds well and use an anti-

bacterial ointment, but NOT neosporin.
