Guest guest
Have you got sandbags at the ready!!?? ...getting scared...FLOODS I'm getting very scared. I live on he Pennin Way and we have a stream running just outside our front door with the road bridge going over it.. The level of water is so high it is now starting to overflow. The Penning Way opposite us comes down a steep grassy bank and the pathway ends in 4 steps down onto the road. This pathway is like a gushing stream and the water flowing from it is a tremendous waterfall. It is VERY scary and the little foot bridge just down the road from us is already under water. We have had it bad before, but never this bad. Sheila AOL's new homepage has launched. Take a tour now.
Guest guest
Sheila, Are you able to contact your local river agency/flood watch to get their advice? I don't know how those organisations operate but, if your area has escaped in the past, they may be unaware that the situation is becoming critical on your patch. Apart from sandbags, start moving the uninsurable, irreplaceable things (eg-photos of grandchildren, etc) to somewhere safer for if the worst does happen. Good luck! Guest guest
We have been told the council are bringing us some sandbags down as a matter of urgency - that was 2 hours ago and they have still not turned up. We have some old sandbags from last time but they are turned to stone. We have been out digging the grass up at the side of the road to divert the water into the beck and that has helped a bit. I will try to take some photo's and show you what's it's like, but it isn't a digital camera - so will have to wait until they get developed. The cottages across the road from us have cellars and they all use these as their kitchens, and they are already flooded. One chap is at work and his pump has stopped working and it is awful. If I'm not around much, you will know I have other things on my mind right now. Luv - Sheila ...getting scared...FLOODS I'm getting very scared. Guest guest
Oh heavens Tracey, I feel like crying - there is so much to think about. tells me not to be so panicky, but I can't simply go out there and turn off the tap - most of the villages are out watching the situation and I have just had to change all my clothes as the rain has soaked right through my coat. I hope it doesn't get to the point where I have to take things upstairs, but it is something we might have to do. Problem is the main road at the top of the hill is flooded, so all the traffic is being diverted through our tiny little village (a very narrow road) and it looks as if they won't be able to get through here much longer. Guest guest
Crikey, that sounds awful! If access to your village is now threatened, your services might begin to fail too. Make sure you have some supplies of drinking water and non-cook food stashed away just to be on the safe side. Definitely move the hard to replace items upstairs. The heavy things like furniture and white goods are covered by insurance (hopefully) so don't drag them around unless you are a masochist! Save the computer though and any paper documentation as losing all your hard work and data would be very painful! Looks like you are in for a hectic day. My thoughts are with you. Guest guest
Hi Sheila I know exactly what you are going through, we had the same in Great Yarmouth last November. I think everyone in that situation panics. I remember spending the entire night moving things upstairs and was out filling sandbags at 4am in the morning. My prayers and thoughts are with you xx > > > > Have you got sandbags at the ready!!?? > > > > > > > > > > ...getting scared...FLOODS > > > > I'm getting very scared.? Guest guest
We managed to survive , but the water got VERY close this time and was rising as we watched it. Stopped raining last night and decided to have a heavy frost instead. Very dry this morning, beck has dropped, though not quite back to normal. Keeping everything crossed that the ground has time to dry out before we get more rain. Luv - Sheila Hi Sheila, How are you this morning. Guest guest
Hi Sheila, So pleased that you were saved at the brink so to speak! I live about 25 years from our river which has benefited from flood bunds( organized flooding of fields) to hold back the water. Hilly areas are more difficult to predict. Fingers crossed for you, We managed to survive , but the water got VERY close this time and was rising as we watched it. Stopped raining last night and decided to have a heavy frost instead.
