Guest guest
Hi all I've posted questions about getting T3 for my mum over past few months. Finally i've got a private prescription. But now i've got it I dont know what to expect. As its more potent than thyroxine should I expect to see a fairly quick response? love Kate
Guest guest
Hi Kate, Are you planning to replace the thyroxine completely or just add to it? Guest guest
Hi Kate Remind me, is your Mum taking any thyroxine and if so how much. Do you have the results of her latest thyroid function tests, as this could be important in deciding what amount of T3 she needs to be started on. It is always best with such an 'active' hormone to start off very slowly with say, 5mcgs. once a day (before a meal) and if she can tolerate that OK for say 7 days, add another 5 mcgs around 2.0p.m.. Taking it twice a day stops any 'peak' in the T3 in her body. T3 has a short half of 6 to 8 hours. I think your Mum should feel a different fairly quickly, but everybody is different and it may well depend how much T3 she needs. Some people need a little, others need a lot to get 'there'. If you got a private prescription, what did the doctor recommend she take - and how? Luv - Sheila my mum and t3 Hi allI've posted questions about getting T3 for my mum over past fewmonths. Guest guest
Hi Sheila & Bella Mum is taking thyroxine. She was on 100mcgs last year but after blood tests in Nov and again in December her GP thought she was over medicated and reduced her dose twice. By Xmas she was on 75mcgs. Her results in November were TSH 0.08 (o.4 - 4.0), T4 27.9 (12 - 22) and T3 5.1 (3.0 - 6.2) Her results in December were TSH 0.4, T4 24.6 and T3 5.3 I got a private prescription for her last week and she has been prescribed 50 mcgs once a day thyroxine 10 mcgms T3 three times a day at breakfast lunch and teatime. I started her (Thursday) on 10 mcgs once a day to be sure she would tolerate it. I was surprised as I noticed a difference that day. Mum was much more alert and she said she felt less confused and more like her old self. Also she wasn't nearly as tired. So I had high hopes. But yesterday and today the T3 hasn't given her that same lift so now I'm confused. love Kate > > Hi Kate > > Remind me, is your Mum taking any thyroxine and if so how much. Guest guest
She might have to wait for a while for her body to get used to the T3. I am surprised she has been prescribed T3 as her T3 result both in November and December appears fine, and her FT4 is high. Why did your doc. decide she needed this? Also, to prescribe such a high dose of T3 straight off is surprising to me. From what you say, she has been prescribed 30 mcgs T3 daily (3 x daily) + 50 mcgs T4. If this were me, I think I would be taking it more slowly to begin with to make absolutely sure she doesn't have a reaction. When I had T3 added to my T4, I was fine until Day 9, when I had a reaction - which wasn't pleasant. I just stopped the T3 and T4 and then went straight on to Armour. Let us know how your Mum responds. Hope this is the first day of her life ) luv - Sheila Hi Sheila & BellaMum is taking thyroxine. Guest guest
Tis all very confusing Kate. I thought it showed that most people with a high T4 were probably not converting to T3, and that is why they dropped the T4 and added in some T3. Seems we will have to wait and see how you Mum gets on, but I do know that lately, there seems to be more and more people dropping T4 altogether for the active T3 and doing wonderfully. Look at Bev! ....and yes, I do think it is always better to play safe with T3 and increase it slowly. If this was me, I would take the 10 mcgs (split x 2) for a couple of weeks to be absolutely sure she had no ill effects and then add another 10 mcgs and stay on that for perhaps 3 to 4 weeks. I think most people have to play this by ear, if she is feeling fine on T3, that will be great, but if she is feeling a little shaky and palpitations, it will show that she is on too high a dose. The beauty of T3 is that if any problems start, you can just stop it and the adverse effects quickly disappear. Luv - Sheila >> She might have to wait for a while for her body to get used to the T3. Guest guest
Hi Kate, I'm suspecting adrenal fatigue because it looks as though perhaps she isn't using the T3 even though she appeared to be converting from T4 to T3. Is your mum on any sort of adrenal support, Nutri Adrenal Extra? The fact that she had 2 good days before lapsing back is another common response with adrenal fatigue. It's a possibility.
