Guest guest
Have any clinicians ever tried variations on the loading test? 48hours, for example? Could it be that some people, due to slower biological/metabolic functions, excrete at a slower rate? Base metabolism rates can be reduced - could therefore iodine excretion? Does impaired organ function (kidney, et al), impair the excretion rate? Did loading results vary according to the amount of urine excreted? Have any clinicians compared iodine loading test results by starting iodine levels as indicated in the spot test? Do persons with a low spot test consistantly return lower percentages that higher ones? Are they inversely related? What is the correlation, if any, of spot levels to loading results? Do consistantly low spot levels return consistantly low loading results? Do increases in spot levels correlate to similar percentage increases to loading results? For example, my spot test returned >.4, with normal being >.15. On the face of it, it would look like I have decent iodine. My loading test returned 70%. Not bad, but not the arbitrarily chosen 90% level either. How do my loading results compare to others with spot levels >.4? It would be helpful to see some in-depth statistical analysis of the results. ....Perhaps that does explain some of my reservations about the iodine loading test as the tell-all on iodine deficiency? > cindi
Guest guest
Here are some interesting comments on the Iodine Loading Test (shared with permission). Zoe_____24 Hour Iodine Loading Test - Is It Suspect?Pat here.I hear this idea that 90% are iodine deficient basedon the 24-hour urine iodine test developed by DrGuy Abraham, MD, and presented in IODINE by Brownstein MD.The suggestion seems to be that if 90% flunk thetest - maybe it's suspect. What do you think? Here's my impression after 3 years of using thetest and treating with Iodoral. When I tested the first 25 people on it 3 years agoI looked at the first 25 results, arranged them frombest to worst and then gave it sort of a commonsense appraisal.I had chosen 25 people that I knew, where I had goodmedical records on them.So I asked myself if the results seemed reasonablebased on what I knew of them.I was impressed with what I saw.First, 90% did Not all get the same results.Target score was 'above 90'.A good score is higher; a worse score is lower. The best score was 76%, the worst score was 24%.So there was a large range of variation.76% is pretty good.24% is pretty bad.The first thing that struck me was that the men werelargely on the high end and women in general on thelow end of the scores. That made sense based on Dr Brownstein's book IODINE.He explained that woman had a greater need for iodinedue to breast tissue being the second biggest consumerof iodine after the thyroid.Of 13-mg of Iodine he said 6-mg went to the thyroid and5-mg went to the breasts. 2-mg to the rest of the body.Large busty women, needing more iodine tested generallylower than smaller busted women. The 2 women who tested in the upper range with themen were both small flat chested women from SE Asia. The 2 lowest scores were women, one about age 60with very advanced diabetes 1 and the other very frailin her 80's with a host of problems. In other words, really sick people did the worst. The man with the lowest score (down with the women)was in his 90's.Really elderly tended to do poorly.I've written before about 3 example cases of womenI treated with Iodoral with dosage based on what wasneeded to optimize their progesterone (based on saliva).HormonesandHealth-Naturally/ message/3602Doses of Iodoral ended up at 1/2, 1 and 3 tablets per day.The woman who only needed 1/2 was a flat-chested,relatively young woman who tested about 70.The woman who needed 1 was about age 50 and tested 52.The woman who needed 3 Iodoral was age 80 and tested 24.In other words, older women tested worse and ended upneeding more Iodoral to optimize their progesterone asmonitored by pre/post saliva testing.Younger healthier women tested better and needed less.I could continue with other observations and examplesbut basically the 24-hour urine test for iodine passedmy common sense question: do these results make'sense' based on what I know of these patients? The intervening 3 years has not changed that assessment. On the contrary. Is all this safe? That's trickier!A good question for another day!Good luck,PatMarch 7, 2007HormonesandHealth-Naturally/ message/3611__________
Guest guest
Hi all, It's been a while since I posted here. My GP just prescribed me generic dissected thyroid. Starting on 1 grain today.. My GP requested I do a iodine test. However the lab is in the USA. Does anyone know of a UK lab that does this test? Basically you ingest some tablets they give you followed by a 24 hr. urine collection. The more deficient a subject is in iodine, the more iodine is retained by the body and the least excreted in the urine. Sufficiency is achieved when 90% or more of the ingested amount is excreted in the urine. Hopefully I can save on shipping costs by using a UK lab. Thanks! Guest guest
Hi It was great to see you in Dublin, and now I am back at my desk (still cold and raining) trying to respond to the 323 messages. It has been a while since you posted and you know how delighted I am that your doctor has decided to give you a trial of Armour thyroid. I hope you do well on it, and that your doctor let's you increase your dose every 4 weeks by half a grain until you get to the dosage that makes you properly well again. What reason did your GP give for an iodine test? Basically, what I heard is the best way to find out whether or not you need iodine is to get some iodine, put this on your skin (preferably where it can't be seen) and see how log it takes before it is absorbed. If it disappears completely within 24 hours, you are in need of iodine - if it is still there after 24 hours, you are probably hypERthyroid. How much of this is true, I have no idea. However, having said that, I have just had a spot removed at the doctors surgery on my leg. Myh calf was swathed with iodine, and it took about 3 days to completely disappear. This could be because I am taking 3 grains Armour daily, though. As to your question, I have no idea where you can get this test done in the UK, but hopefully, somebody else will be able to help you. How are you feeling now you have been taking Armour for 3 days??? Luv - Sheila > Hi all, > > It's been a while since I posted here. My GP just prescribed me > generic dissected thyroid. Guest guest
Hi Sheila, It was great to meet up and chat. I hope you enjoyed your trip to Dublin. Maybe next time I am in Yorkshire you can give me some recommendations on touristy things - I hear there is a LS Lowry museum somewhere, maybe it's in Lancashire... I haven't noticed any difference on 1 grain yet. However, it has only been 6 days so I suppose I should wait a bit longer. Looking forward to feeling better soon! My GP gave me enough for 1.5 grains a day. But I think I will raise up to 2 over the next 4-5 weeks (all going well). As for the iodine, I think my GP has been doing some research on the subject and thinks it may be a factor in my health. I will give your test a go, thanks! I went to see Neil Young yesterday. He played an outdoor gig here in Dublin. He was great!
