Guest guest
Hi Sorry to hear about your diagnosis – the most important thing at this stage is to ask lots of questions and read a lot. An overactive thyroid can cause its own problems so has to be treated but you need to know what the underlying cause is – if you have loads of thyroid antibodies it is possible that you have Hashimoto’s in which case you may well become underactive eventually. To my mind tablets are better than surgery which is irreversible but as you say there is a risk of putting on weight. You will need to have regular blood tests and must go back to your consultant if you start to get any signs of hypo – not just weight gain but fatigue, muscle pains etc etc. Consultants sometimes treat Hyperthryoidsim with a mix of Carbimazole and Thyroxine to try and get the right balance. I was originally diagnosed with an overactive thyroid about 25 years ago and was first on Propylthiouracil and then later on Carbimazole – overall over a period of 5 years. I got on better with Carbimazole but I have fought with my weight ever since, especially when I became hypo about 15 years ago. So ask your consultant what the cause is, what the treatment options are and what the side effects are and make sure to get your bloods done regularly. Hope that the treatment brings you back to some version of normality and that you feel better on it. Charis
