Amount of Iodine per drop of Lugol's

Hello List;

I was also interested in knowing how much Iodine is an a drop of

Lugol's. So I did some calculations and this what I came up with.

Please check my calculations in case I made a mistake.

According to Lugol's label:

Lugol's

5% w/v Iodine

10% w/v Potassium Iodide

According to my understanding w/v = grams/100ml(kind of

confusing),

So, 5%w/v = 5grams/100ml iodine and 10% w/v PotIodide = 10g/100ml.

Question? How do we convert to milligrams(mg) per drops?

Given: 5ml = 1tsp, 1tsp = 160 drops, 1000mg = 1g;

Calculation:

Lugol's Iodine content at 5%w/v = (5g/100ml) x (5ml/tsp) x

(1tsp/160drops) x (1000mg/g) = 1.6 mg/drop Iodine

Lugol's PotassiumIodide content at 10%w/v = (10g/100ml) x (5ml/tsp) x

(1tsp/160drops) x (1000mg/g) = 3.1 mg/drop PotIodide

So the answer is, each drop of Lugol's provides:

1.6 mg Iodine and 3.1 mg of Potassium Iodide.

Dear BarbF,

Thanks for that information. Now to figure out how much idodine

this body of mine needs.

If anybody has any suggestions, please let me know.

Love,

Pamela

Will somebody please look on their bottle of Lugo's Solution

and

tell me the amount of iodine per drop?

Hi Pamela..I'm new around here and have been lurking a bit. I take

2

drops Lugol's daily, and it has 12 mg. per drop total of iodine and

iodide. Don't know the ratios. Sorry.

Take care,

BarbF

These are important questions, so I've added some reference sources on converting one type of measure into another. Drops are particularly difficult since they vary a lot in size. I've seen solutions measured as 1 ml = approximately 15 - 33 drops. I don't know how many drops would be in a Lugol ml.

How to convert drops to ml, etc. CONVERSION OF UNITS, Institute of Chemistry. Has drop down lists that allow you to convert any measure to any other measure.

Medical conversion information for liquids, solids, etc. common abbreviations, % solutions, how to convert almost any measure into another measure

You can find these in Links > 99 Ways to Contribute to this Site, Search Resources, etc. > "How To" Information > How to convert drops to ml, etc.

This difficulty in measurement is one of the reasons Abraham decided to develop Iodoral, so there could be more reliability in dosage.

Another question I would love for someone to research for the painters is how much iodine is actually absorbed through the skin. I seem to recall a range from 12% to 80%. (I am vague about where I read about this. My best guess is Nyiri, 1931, mentions about 12 %, and Derry mentions about 80+%.) I would expect Lugol's to have pretty complete absorption when taken orally.

I've just started a folder for relevant links if anyone finds any: Links > 21 Iodine Information > Specific Topics > 02 Iodine Absorption -- Transdermal and Oral
