Guest guest
I'm absolutely no expert in this - new to forum myself, but wanted to give you some sort of answer. It looks to me like he wants to test to see if your pituitary is functioning correctly. Normally when your cortisol levels get low the pituitary would produce ACTH to stimulate the adrenals to produce more (a bit like TSH is produced to get thyroid to produce T4). So I assume if you have low levels of ACTH as well as low cortisol this could mean the pituitary is not doing it's job quite as it should. Have they booked you in for an appointment or do you have to wait? They did an " insulin tolerated test " also known as a " stress test " . I knew my cortisol was low but I thought my ACTH was fine, and this is why when I got back home after the test and read the letter I was a bit shocked to read that my serum ACTH was " unrecordable " . To me it means that it is so low they could hardly find any ACTH in the blood. It has to be bad, no? Tia x
Guest guest
Hi Tia I'm not sure what it can mean, I know there is a pituitary patient group alled PITPAT. Maybe it might be worth vsiting their site to find out a bit more. I'm sorry I can't be more help for you... It's very frightening when you don't understand what is happening with your health. Alternatively if you are really worried, why not phone the secretary for your doctor and explain how shocked you were to recieve this letter and could she arrange to speak to someone who can explain what it may mean? Even if your doc is busy, they may be able to put you in contact with a specialist nurse, who are often better at the explaining side of things! Whatever you decide to do, try not to worry too much, and let us know what happens. Guest guest
Hi, Look up adrenal insufficiency, if you are hypo then the adrenals get stressed too, and need supplementation. Subject: WHAT DOES THIS MEAN???? Hello everyone, I have just received a letter from my consultant. The end bit says: " you do have a relatively loe basal cortisol of 127nmol/L and an unrecordable serum ACTH. In view of the latter findings I think it important that we should informally exclude pituitary deficiency and I have organised pituitary function testing " . I have just had my insulin test (stress test) and will have the result in a few days. The blood test from last week: Cortisol 127nmol/L 08:00hr - 09:00hr -> 185 - 624 nmol/L 23:00hr - 24:00hr -> <100 nmol/L ACTH <1.1 ng/L (0 - 50) What " could " this mean???? ------------------------------------ Messages are not a substitute for professional medical advice.
