Yes you are correct. If you double it will be the 4% solution which is the closest you can get to the old formula. Pathetic isn't it? The meth drug dealers will still get it and the people who need it can't.

2% vs 5%

Hi all,

I used to be able to buy "strong Iodine solution" from jcrows in a 500ml bottle. Now I find that I no longer can. Apparently there was a law enacted in 2007 from the DEA? Anyway, the only 5% is in a 1 oz bottle and since I use this for my HORSES, it is NOT going to last long, lol.

I can get the 2% though. Am I correct in thinking that I would need to double the dose using the 2%?

Thanks so much.

I can still buy the 7% solution for my animals at the feed store. It has the same iodine/iodide percentage as lugol's, but I think it's an alcohol based solution.

Thank you Steph. That's what I though.

Adria

ps, , yes, I have to use a strong iodine in alcohol for dipping

the foal's navels after they're born, but I believe that is wood

alcohol it is mixed with? Not something to ingest, I wouldn't think.

Right, we use it externally.

Could someone please repost the math on this?

I thought I saved it, but it accidentally got deleted. I am online

trying to order iodine from Swanson's but I see that it is only 2%. So

how many mg per drop?

Thanks,

Debbie

Hi Debbie,

2% Lugol's is about 2.5 mg. per drop. So 20 drops equals about 50mg.

5% Lugol's is about 6.25 mg per drop. 8 drops equal 50 mg.

Hope this helps. Kathleen

Re: 2% vs. 5% ?

2% is LESS THAN half of 5%. Specifically, 2% is 40% of 5%. Or looked at the

other way around, 5% is 2 and a half times 2%. Worded in math: 5% = 2.5 times

2%.

Warning - lots of (simple) math here but I'm giving choices, pick the one method

of calculating conversion from 5% to 2% you like, and ignore the other options.

Method 1: To calculate the number of drops of 2% if you know the number of

drops of 5%, multiply the 5% number of drops by 2.5.

Example: You are using 7 drops of 5%, 7 times 2.5 = 17.5 drops. I.e. you want

17 or 18 drops, not 14.

Method 2: This is really the same as Method 1 but bring the mg amount into

focus. One drop of Lugol's 5% is 6.25 mg, two drops is [approximately] 12.5 mg

Iodine/Iodide. Look at amount of mg you want and convert to drops of 5%, this is

how must discussions are worded. Then use method 1 to convert the number of

drops of 5% to 2%, by multiplying the number of drops by 2.5.

Example 2A: If I want 50 mg iodine, that's 8 drops of the standard 5%. (50

divided by 6.25mg per drop = 8 drops). Change that to 2% drops by multiplying

the number of 5% drops by 2.5. 8 times 2.5 = 20 drops of 2% for that same 50

mg.

Example 2B (your dosage): To get 44 mg in 5% drop, divide 44 by 6.25 per drop =

7 drops. 7 times 2.5 = 17.6 drops of 2%.

Method 3: Start the thinking with mg per drop of 2%. A 2% drop is 40% of a 5%

drop. 40% of 6.25mg is 2.5 mg per drop. A 2% drop is 2.5 mg, if I want 50 mg,

that's 50 divided by 2.5 per drop = 20 drops. If I think in mg targets and

remember 2.5 mg per drop, I can think directly in 2% drops, I never have to

think about 5% drops again.

Note: There is also some 2.2% Lugols from some manufacturers. 2.2 is 10% more

than 2, so if I buy 2.2 I'd be getting 10% more than 50 mg, but we don't need to

worry too much about whether we're getting 50 mg or 55 mg, right?

[but watch out for brands that advertise the percentage differently. There's a

brand sold on ebay and a few other places that advertises not by the percentage

of elemental iodine but by totaling the iodine and the potassium iodide. They

call the standard Lugol's not 5% but 15%! (5% iodine, 10% potassium iodide --

by the old standard language that's 5%, to at least one manufacturer that's

15%). Their 7% may sound stronger than Crows 5% but it's really 2.3%. Their 3%

is really 1%. Make sure you know - or ask if you don't know - if the advertised

percentage is stating just the iodine (what we are used to) or is adding

together the iodine and the potassium iodide.]
