Huge stones

In August I was away on vacation and had a nasty gallbladder attack and spent

six days in

a hospital on demerol & antibiotics. At the time they did an ultrasound and said

that my

gallbladder was " full of stones and sludge " . My husband heard them mention " golf

ball

sized " . My gallbladder was inflamed, but I was NOT jaundiced. They said I should

have my

gallbladder out when I got home.

I have seen a surgeon since who reiterates this opinion, but I've been uncertain

so asked

my G.P. if I could have another ultrasound. I have just had the ultrasound

repeated, and

there are two large stones (one is 4.1 cm diameter), several smaller ones and

some sludge.

I'm female, overweight, hypertensive, nearly 50, and diabetic (but

well-controlled - my

HbA1c is 5.9), and would love to avoid surgery altogether.

I have been afraid to try a flush because of the enormous size of those two

stones. If they

got stuck it seems to me that I'd be in a lot of trouble and looking at

emergency surgery.

My doctor would not be impressed.

On the positive side: Now that I know what the problem is (I always thought my

gallbladder attacks were " gas " ) I've been very successful in avoiding further

attacks, so

holding off on the surgery has been painless.

What do you think? Is it possible to pass these stones without landing myself in

the ER?
