Guest guest
Hello Kay, I am struggling with the same problem. I was on Zetia.. but it exhausted me. I did try statins, but I was in agony. It is still an ongoing process with me. I am interested as well to hear how others have handle it. Carol
Guest guest
Cholesterol lowering drugs actually started out as antifungal drugs years ago. High cholesterol is caused by fungus and Difulcan or Nystatin (Rx drugs) or natural products like oil of wild oregano, garlic, apple cider vinegar, etc., are all antifungals with no bad side effects. Information comes from Doug Kaufmann, nutritionist who has the TV show called Know the Cause! on satellite. He's been in this field for 36 years. Guest guest
Hi, my daughter has CMT and has the same problem you do, I suggested to her to do what has helped me, a bowl of oatmeal everyday, it could be breakfast, lunch, dinner or before bedtime, it really works. I myself cannot take statins and was being pressured to take them, I started oatmeal and my cholesterol improved, enough that my doc was impressed and didn't pressure me anymore. Blessings! Guest guest
Since I, too, can't take statins (including red yeast rice, which is, itself, a statin) I have found diet to be very effective in cutting cholesterol. Not everyone likes it - and it can be difficult at times - but a strict vegetarian/vegan (i.e., no milk, cheese, eggs, etc.) has done wonders for me. Avocados, almonds/walnuts, red grapefruit juice, etc., are all vegetarian, and have all been shown in research to lower total cholesterol. I eat/drink them in moderation, so they may be part of the reason my cholesterol is dropping. The physicians I am following are: Dr. C.B. Esselstyn, Jr., M.D. ('Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease', www.heartattackproof.com), with The Cleveland Clinic; Dr. T. Colin ('The China Study', www.thechinastudy.com); Dr. McDougall, M.D. (www.drmcdougall.com); and, Dr. Weill, M.D. Google these, or go to a bookstore, and you can evaluate the research for yourself. The nice thing, as an added bonus, is weight loss/maintenance, which is so important for those of us with CMT.

Guest guest
Everyone is different. Some people can tolerate them without issue, others can't. That's not to say they should be the first line of treatment for high cholesterol. It's definitely prudent to try diet and exercise first. If, however, a person is genetically predisposed to high cholesterol/heart disease and diet & exercise don't bring the problem under control, then the person should make an informed decision about statins with the help of a knowledgable, trusted physician.
